So I was seated in the chair at the barbers, and there were two girls on duty - both in their twenties, I'd say.

And a brief conversation happened at the other chair, just within earshot, about a gay storyline on a soap - I vaguely know about it (on Eastenders) but I don't watch that show at all.

The girl said something about switching the channel is disgust near the end. There must have been a kiss or something. But there was also some lesbian storyline on Coronation Street.

So the girl doing my hair hears this, and picks up this topic with me. "Do you watch Coronation Street?" "Do you watch Eastenders?" I reply no.

In very clear words of annoyance and prejudice, she says to me "I turn on one channel and see two guys kissing, then I switch to another channel and see two girls kissing!"

Well....

I just felt something well up inside me very quickly, something that NEVER used to happen. And I was a bit surprised myself when I retorted in a calm but clear and direct voice....

"Do you know I came out two weeks ago?"

*pause*

"What?"

"I'm gay. I came out two weeks ago."

Her reply, as quick as anything....

"Oh, that's fine, I've no problem with that. I was just commenting on it, that's all."

(words to that effect, anyway)

Luckily (or unluckily) she had just finished her job with me.

Short pleasantries were exchanged about my new short haircut, and the usual thankyou and goodbye.

So there we have it.

It appears that on topics about being gay, I've suddenly developed an EXTREMELY short temper and a liability to shoot my mouth off without thinking. This is VERY uncharacteristic of me.

I feel strangely 'tired' of having to put up with the occasional derogatory comments. Yet I put up with them fine for all my adult life to this point.

Do you think I did the right thing? Should I train myself to hold my tongue in these situations?

What an unexpected turn of events this afternoon.

EDIT: And if someone can find this 'gay kiss' for me, I'd like to see it. I've been searching around for it, but it's nowhere to be found.

i'd find myself another stylist for my hair.

Hooray, ChickenGuy!

Yes, stand up for yourself!

You were polite but firm. That's perfect.

I think your response was perfect. I agree with FPNY I'd find a new stylist too. I had a stylist once who kept asking pointed questions about a guy at my work, that we both knew. I knew he was bi and that he and his wife had an open marriage. But, it was none of her business. So, I told her to ask him herself. Then I changed stylist and made sure to run into her so she could see someone else had cut my hair.

I don't think you came across a angry. I think it's important to say those kind of things to people. Who know it might do some good. Maybe (or maybe not) she'll think a little before she shoots off her mouth next time.

^ Thanks for the support, guys. (*8*)

I found it. What a fuss those two girls made about something that's fairly lame and bland.

Skip to 1:55 for the whole dialogue, or 3:15 until the end for the 'hairdressers switch channel' part.

EDIT: Haha! But there's no escape from us homos!

Here's the lesbians kissing on the other channel!

I confront ignorance where I find it and take my business to friendly places.
