So: I'm not saying I'm balding yet, but I do think I can spot thin hair when I look in the mirror at some places, so I'm thinking it might be reasonable to do something against it already. A guy I know recommended me hair regrower, saying it really works. And no: I'm not going to ask you which you use, or could recommend me (because it's unlikely my country will sell those exact ones).

I'd rather have the following questions answered:

-What should I watch out for when choosing what hair regrower to buy?
-How do I apply it correctly?
-How long will I have to wait to see improvement?
-Anything else I should know?

I will appreciate every help I am given :)

Hey Colton,

By the looks of your profile pic, you don't need anything to worry about. You appear to have a very healthy head of hair. But, if you are worried about the possibility of hair loss, I would suggest you see a dermatologist and have him evaluate the situation. He could recommend the proper product to use and also give you the correct usage and answer all your questions. Good luck and let us know how things go.

Is there baldness in you ancestry? Heredity is not predictable, but if none of your grandparents or their brothers were bald, you are probably not going to be.

There's a thread in the reference section about several members' experience with hair replacement:

You may want to see a dermatologist first to determine which type of hair loss you have. There are different causes and each has a treatment that may be more effective. The key thing that most physicians will tell you is to start treatment early. Once the hair follicle dies, it cannot be restored. If you can treat the follicle to either keep it alive or delay its death, you will slow the balding process.

There's generally two options available that you can try before resorting to a toupee or hair transplantation:
  1. Topical restorers which are may be effective in some cases of androgenic alopecia (e.g. minoxidil)
  2. Oral medications that block the effect of male hormone on the hair follicle (e.g. finasteride)

There may be other medications and treatments available in your country. But again, instead of losing valuable time with treatments that may or may not work, you should see a dermatologist and determine what your options are now, before the loss becomes significant.

LMAO, you think that's me? ;D I wish, but it's Colton Haynes. I'm not sure I want to share pictures of myself here

My father started balding when he was about 50, which I am not quite, yet :D Which is why I'm worried about having thin hair at some spots already :S

Thanks, I realize that, which is why I'm finding out what it is I can do :D

So thanks @ everyone for their advice

Just remember that those "hair growers" work only as long as you continue to use them...and they're not cheap. This would be a financial commitment as well as vanity. If you stop using them, they stop working.

FWIW, I've been using the rogaine foam on my receding hairline for about about 5 months and have started to notice some regrowth. I used to spike my hair back with some gel, but the hair loss was getting so noticeable that I buzzed it short (size 1.5 guard). However, I've grown my hair out and it isn't as bad as it used to be. I was skeptical that I would see any results, but so far I'm sold. I've heard that the liquid rogaine (non-foam) type works best, but I haven't been able to located it here (in Middle East country).

I haven't tried Propecia, but I've heard that works well too. I'm not sure what that costs and if insurance will cover any of it. Anyone know what Propecia costs? Thanks!

Finasteride (Propecia) is now generic. It's on the $9 price list at Walmart and several pharmacy chains will match the price.

Rogaine and Propecia in combination. Don't pay attention to the Rogaine advisory that states that it only works at the crown. For many men it works for the entire scalp, and you should apply it to the entire area usually affected by male pattern baldness, even it you don't--at this time--think you have a problem. You have to loose a lot of hair before you start to look as if you have a problem. Better to save as much as you can. You should also shampoo every day or at least three times a week with Nizoral. It has the reputation--I understand, well deserved--of helping one retain hair. Rogaine, Propecia, Nizoral--without delay!

I also understand there are laser treatments that have been shown to reverse hair loss.
