Off topic, but yes, "Jewish" is considered as something more than a religion. It implies a specific culture with a group that is predominantly of an ethnicity arising from the Middle East.
Judaism as a religion is open to anyone, but "Jewish" culture has evolved to exist outside of a religious context, hence "Jewish atheist" (individuals who acknowledge their culturally Jewish roots and practices but do not practice the religion at all).
You can liken it to the idea of WASPs, which is a more descriptive term (White, Anglo Saxon, Protestant). There is a cultural association there that goes beyond the religion (Protestantism).
