!!! Happy Black History Month 2014 !!!

One of my favorite American painters is Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1859-1937

They are wrong for that, but I'm not gonna lie and pretend like I wouldn't have been there for that meal.

I know, right ? My college did that one time during Black History Month. They had a BHM dinner and there was definitely fried chicken, greens , sweet potatoes, mac n' cheese etc. My friends and I joked about how stereotypical it was but best believe that we went right up there and got seconds.

I don't remember there being watermelon. I may have had a problem with that. But, hell.....I love watermelon. IDK. It sucks that liking these kinds of foods has such negative connotations to it. Plus Black folks werent the only people going up there to eat.

That being said, yes...I can see why people found it offensive. Its like serving potatoes and whiskey for Irish American Heritage Month.

It's not offensive when it's identified as soul food, however.

" Its like serving potatoes and whiskey for Irish American Heritage Month."

What's wrong with that? It is a staple of an everyday diet, isn't it?

Audre Lorde

Self-styled "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," writer Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing the injustices of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Her poetry, and "indeed all of her writing," according to contributor Joan Martin in Black Women Writers (1950-1980): A Critical Evaluation, "rings with passion, sincerity, perception, and depth of feeling." ]

Concerned with modern society's tendency to categorize groups of people, Lorde fought the marginalization of such categories as "lesbian" and "black woman," thereby empowering her readers to react to the prejudice in their own lives. While the widespread critical acclaim bestowed upon Lorde for dealing with lesbian topics made her a target of those opposed to her radical agenda, she continued, undaunted, to express her individuality, refusing to be silenced.

I need to pick up a copy of Sister Outsider.

He was admitted to the bar in Maine in 1844 and later served as a judge in Charleston in 1873.

Can I ?..... This was really important to me. It may not seem like a big deal but I was all up in that movie theatre when The Princess and The Frog was released. My sister and I were the only people in there without children

Princess Tiana: Disney's First Black Princess

The best part about this is the fact that little black girls are able to see themselves inside the story instead of viewing it like an outsider. Yes, I pretended to be White characters while watching films as a child but there was always that Not Quite feeling during make believe.

I also love to see little white girls with Princess Tiana bookbags, it gives my that (!) yay ! feeling.

Tiana was voiced by the beautiful and extremely talented Anika Noni Rose, another amazing Black actress.

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVERYONE

I really enjoyed the Black History Month thread from last year and I thought that I would try to re-create this for 2014.

Today on Google you can find that they are celebrating Harriet Tubman. Who has one of the most interesting life stories you will ever read. I question whether I would even be here if it werent for her. Who knows how many of our family members have crossed paths with this amazing woman.

As for a contemporary person Id like to post about Lavern Cox, who I admire more and more everyday. Id love to see her speak some day.

She currently stars in Netflix's Orange is the New Black. Which is amazing. Check it out.

She is not black.....

Black inventor Frederick M Jones invented the refrigerated truck in 1935.

haha yes, you may...and I definitely understand how special that movie was to black children (or anyone who could appreciate such a landmark in Disney history). Sadly, I have yet to see it. *makes a note*

and Anika is beautiful. <3 I've always loved her.

Edit: Pat, figjam (whatever your name is)...please do not start that nonsense in this thread. Thank you.
