Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

Actually, his birthday is January 15th. But I gotcha. :)

But it is Geena Davis's birthday!

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

I was with him in Selma, AL, and that is almost as sad for me as the
day he was murdered. Hopefully, we Americans know that to much of the world we look as ridiculous as the South Africans did with
apartheid.

We still have a lot to do, and it is time
to finish the job and open the dream to all here.

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

The 3rd monday in Jan was chosen for 2 reasons.
1) The law placing the majority of federally mandated holidays on such a date
2) Because there had been a holiday in parts of the 'old south' in that same time frame (Lee-Jackson Day) (& that ain't Andrew Jackson)

So the holiday in Jan was converted to a rememberance of a positive, desirable goal. ..|

Hope it works

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

Is mail delivered today?

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hoping to get that dream you ordered?

Great man, great message. Still get chills listening to that speech.

Anyone see the Onion version? Martin Luther King had a dream where white kids and black kids could join hands together, and his seventh-grade science teacher was there, for some reason, and then...

I am surprised how heartless people (well person) are in this thread. I remember last year, no one even bothered to say one thing in the three threads created on here. I guess if it doesn't benefit gay people, it isnt important.

Me?

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

Are you saying I'm the heartless one?

I would wonder why... Is it because I don't bow down and say how wonderful he is?

It goes without saying.

The fact that Dr. King has his own federal holiday is a testament to the greatness that was. You know there are only three men graced with federal observances in the US?

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

I wasnt talking about you. And I am not asking you to bow down. I didn't. I just said happy birthday.

and i was talking about atomx7. good lord.

I'm sorry if you find mail offensive. I checked online and couldn't find if it was delivered today so I asked here, is that unreasonable?
Are you upset with all the people that don't post in this thread? I almost didn't, but I was wondering if there was mail today.
No. And all the banks and post offices are closed.

Thanks :)

so...what exactly were you expecting? kinda sad, but i think for alot of people today is still more about having the day off from work/school than an actual remembrance.

Since he was talking about me being heartless for asking if mail was delivered today, I'm guessing since you were commenting on that, this is directed at me as well. I just wanted to let you know that I'm not in school (yet), nor do I "work" average work days (I freelance). I don't know why you are all getting so worked up over me asking if mail was delivered today.

Re: Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.

^ He probably took it to mean that you were basically saying yeah, whatever… and asking if there will be mail delivered today as a way of patronizing the significance of the holiday.

Oh well, can't please everyone. :P

actually i wasn't referring to ANYONE in general. for a second i had to wonder if the mail was running today my damn self. i was asking the OP what he was expecting everybody to say. we all know what day it. some of us acknowledge it's importance, some of us don't....wasn't attacking anyone.

Ok, sorry. (*8*)

Personally, I wish people would celebrate the ideas (& ideals) in their hearts & lives rather than with parades & parties.

As Willsboy84 pointed out, people seem to forget the 'why' & focus on the 'what' (as in "what's in it for me").
Same is true for Labor Day, Memorial Day, et cetera.

If gays ever Do get civil rights, I wonder if this holiday will serve for us or if some queens will need a different date ? Just a thought.

Oh, HELL no. We won't be celebrating on this day. It's in the middle of winter, and we are NOT marching down the street in our resplendence covered up in a parka.
