why is torture such a surprise? don't you think our government uses methods outside the law all the time to achieve its goals? whatever they may be. "truth commission"? do you really want to know all our countries dirty little secrets?

Maybe we should. If it's happening, it should be debated. This is not the kind of thing you can just hide away forever and hope it will never get out of hand.

1. At what point is the government doing something that is so repulsive that it has to be addressed?

2. How do we know what they're up to if we never question them when they tell us it's a matter of national security?

People with power frighten me. Even more when a majority seems to believe those people can be trusted. Those are exactly the people I don't trust.
