Is it just me.. or does it seem that the civil war left an impact that still affects us today? (Racism down there is STILL strong) Personally I feel the south has so many different views then the north GENERALLY. I know this sounds like a wild idea.. and maybe its just a dumb impulsive idea of mine.. but the south wanted to separate so badly so why not give them what they want? Down there its mostly republicans and its mostly democrats up north. That's GENERALLY speaking. Its the southern states that voted Bush. I've been down south and talked to many. Many WANT the war there. If anything.. give them their own freedom to be the confederate states of America. They still wave their confederate flags as if its a proud thing. Think about when a hurricane hits.. they won't have the funds that the North has. As for agriculture.. we would have to push ourselves more but we would be better off.

I Don't hate anyone living in the south.. i dont hate any person or group. (Unless you're one that hates.) If the southerners want their freedom so bad still.. why are we keeping them as part of the Union?

Yes, it is true that racist attitudes and bad feelings still run high in the South, however as you well know, not everyone in the South has racist viewpoints.

Now, you are actually suggesting we officially dissolve the United States because of this issue.

First, ask yourself ... "Is the issue as bad off as you are suggesting?" that it merits this rather extreme proposal?

Keep in mind that we have soldiers from the South that are fighting for the "entire United States of America" ... not just their part of the country.

However, do we still have slavery running rampant in the South in this day and age? Are Blacks forced to work out on the Plantations and in the Fields, while at the mercy of their White masters?

What about states that want and do not want Gay Marriage? Should we dissolve those states from the rest of the country as well?

What about Pro Life and Pro Choice states? Should the states that are Pro Life be separated from the rest of the United States, as well?

As long as we don't have forced slavery and hate crimes running rampant in the South, then Whites and Blacks can at least co-exist with each other in their daily lives. Nobody has to particularly love each other, as long as they can live in peace with each other.

These things simply take time ... and in some states ... a lot more time compared to other states. The key is in our nation's youth, that they receive the proper education and have positive influences in their lives to move beyond the racial boundaries that they may learn in their own home.

For anyone, white or black, who doesn't like or has grievances with the South, might I politely suggest that we have interstates all over the region, and those persons are all free to get into their cars and direct said vehicle NORTH.

I lived in the South for about 20 years and can honestly say I hated the Civil War by the time I left. One day at my office the chief Johnny Reb was spouting his evil diatribe against Yankees, blacks and Jews.....so I just blurted out ..."Jeez, Roy, your just mad because a bunch of fucking hick farmers came down here and burned down Tara, .... get over it." Roy was a big Republican, too...so I asked him if he would have voted for Lincoln. After that he never really spouted off about the good old days when I was around.

But from reading this incoherent post, I can only assume that the South does have better schools than up North:badgrin:.

Dude, you live in Illinois...if you want to secede because you "would be better off", please by my guest. Just remember, Florida belongs to us...so kiss Disney World and the beautiful beaches and resorts good-bye; enjoy your protein bars because your local produce stand is officially closed; no more coca-cola for you...hope you're a Pepsi guy...because we're not exporting to Illinois; the good news...without SEC football, you guys might finally win a national championship.;)

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

No, they have Mexicans for that, now. :(

I spent most of my life in the South, and there is no more than a small percentage that still clings to the dream of the Confederacy in any real way. And I'll say that the relationship between races is more poisonous in Philadelphia and Boston than it is in Birmingham and Memphis these days, but all over the US, we have a long, long way to go in treating one another with dignity and respect

Very well said, BluesDog. I love Civil War history, and it was an fascinating time in America. Even Winston Churchill had huge respect for the Confederacy leaders of Stonewall Jackson and RE Lee. Since so much of the war was fought on southern grounds all around where some of us live, of course, there is an interest in that war. It doesn't mean that we re-live it eveyday or support all of any of the principal issues of that war...and there were many beyond slavery. In fact, it was years into the war before Lincoln finally "decided" that the war was about the abolishment of slavery. I think the OP misunderstands the respectful balancing that southerners do between our past and our present.

And you're so right about the poisonous race issues in the non-south today. And the OP forgets that the South is full Northern "migrants" in big and small towns. Something must be right in the South for so many transplants to choose here to live....something more than our sweet tea:D. The funny thing is that the deepest and most disturbing racism that I usually encounter from whites is often from northern transplants who come from regions that have fewer blacks. I'm talking about Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, New Hampshire, and Maine. It is really astounding...these people have never learned the art of living day-to-day with people different from themselves. However, Southerners are quite accustomed to this, and accomplish harmony quite comfortably.

I'm reading a book right now on WW2 and the FDR administration. One of the more interesting facets is that there were numerous moments of racial tension not just in the military (which, btw, had plenty of 'non-south' related racial issues itself) but also in the homeland industrial re-birth. And as many, if not more, of the explosive racial episodes happened outside of the south. And this was some 75 years after the Civil War.

I've been to the south a few times and what has struck me is how segregated it still is.

Up here, I tend to see a lot of mixing with different nationalities. While in the South I saw most people keeping on their 'side'.

I also saw that the great majority of the service work was done by minorities, I don't see that here that much. I see a good representation of all races in different positions (from managerial to serving fast food)

and my only experiences with blatant racism have happened in the South too. In here is more passive aggressive racism...

i actually prefer that. at least here i know where i stand.

it is annoying, though, to hear my fellow north carolinians (i was born here) tell me to "go back to mexico." :grrr:

Oh this idea's ridiculous. But I don't think it's hard to agree that the Mason-Dixon line still wields power. Southerners aren't screaming for the confederate states but that division has grown (I believe) into a largely social, cultural, and political division (and of course there are many exceptions as certain areas develop differently and such).

Sammie13 is right to point out that racism has been under-reported north of Mason/Dixon. Boston's school desegregation riots of the 70's were vicious. that said, I loved reading "Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War" by Tony Horwitz. There are still folks deep in Dixie who cling to the "fine old traditions".

VERRY true! Long Island is a segregated disaster.

If you don't actively strive to counter the bad karma that a war generates in your mind it will eventually kill you.

Add my voice to the chorus of Southerners who don't hear much murmuring about secession these days. Most of my friends have sold their Confederate money as collectibles.

That's not to say that there isn't a certain amount of misty-eyed romanticism about the ante-bellum days. There certainly is. And I suspect that some of it is tied to some sort of subliminal feeling of white superiority. Just try, just try to soft-peddle any custom or landmark related to the Confederacy and you'll find out how sharply the local battle lines are drawn.

(I'm not sure that's quite as strong in Texas as it is in much of the rest of the former Confederacy. The history and demographics are a little different here.)

I usually lol when people don't know what the hell they are talking about. Some people that live out of state actually believe that Louisiana is full of voodo and superstitious shit.

I don't know about other southern states, but there is so many misconceptions about Louisiana, it's crazy.

I know what u mean, I've noticed a different atmosphere since I've moved to Charlotte NC from Chicago. Other than black men and white women (I'll reserve my thoughts on that phenomenon) I don't see a lot of interracial relationships down here.

Around my area, I see a lot of interracial couples with mixed children and they express their love just like everybody else that is outside of interracial relationships. I guess it all depends on where you live in the South.

However it's still sad in modern age that some generations of Southerners are still being taught hate and intolerance outside of their race. They don't represent the New South which is all about diversity and destroying the stereotype of the Old South which has the bad tradition of practicing racism and bigotry.

They're scared.

The media makes them paranoid.

In Arizona, I have heard anti-Mexican statements by everyone. Blacks, whites, MEXICANS (yes Mexicans using slurs for illegal Mexican immigrants---the one that rhymes with nacho), young people, old people. Everyone uses it.

I've come to the conclusion from my experiences that pretty much everyone hates Mexicans. Not everyone in the sense that all 300 million Americans despise people of Mexican descent. But all demographic groups have shown serious disdain for your group---even fellow minorities which is all the more puzzling.

Some genius the other day at the post office started talking openly about the state adding an extra letter/number to the license plate. And some old timer about two people behind me said "It's cause of all of these damn Mexicans." That was kind of funny, but the living fossil was serious.

There are certain elements in our society that have continuously been afraid of people that are different. All I can say to you is that time isn't on their sides.

Be patient... it's the waiting game.
