Have any of you ever had a dental root canal done?

I just came from my dentist's appt. He referred me to an endodontic dental group. He says I need to have a root canal done. I was wondering if anyone here has had one. If so, please share your experiences with me. Such as how painful was it ? (the Novocaine shot is bad enough for me) Should I plan to take the next day off work or will I feel like going back to work the next day?

Thanks for any insight that readers contribute.
 
I've had several root canals.
It is a procedure which is complicated and somewhat painful.
The preparation for it is actually worse than the procedure itself.
Once it is completed, you will feel so much better!
You can probably go back to work the next day, depending on the severity of the procedure (every nerve is different).
The first time was bad because I didn't know what to expect.
The subsequent procedures were much easier.
 
I've had at least three consecutively, same tooth, and each the same as the last for pain during the procedure. They've all failed and the kicker is the infection was caused by a previous dentist's incompetence. I plan on replacing the tooth entirely, just not yet if I can help it.

Thankfully no, i had an extraction last week and the two injections hurt a lot more than getting the tooth pulled.
 
You are right. The numbing procedure can be the worst part of the experience, and a lot of that comes from your worry and fear about how it will feel. But if the dentist knows his stuff, it won't be as bad as you fear. He will probably start by swabbing the gum tissue where the site of the novocaine/lidocaine injection will be to numb the surface tissue. It will probably take two or maybe three injections to completely numb the tooth, and the subsequent injections after the first will already be working in numbed tissue; so they won't be very uncomfortable. If the area is properly numbed, you won't feel the actual root canal. And the dentist may prescribe you some pills to take after the numbing agent wears off (in about 4 hours or so). So while it is no picnic, relax and don't make yourself feel worse because of anticipated dread.
 
About injections: when I was a kid, doctors and nurses used to use and reuse the same needles over and over for injections. Of course the needles were sterilized between uses on different patients. But they were never as sharp and painless with repeated use as they were at the first use.

Today injection needles are one-time-use items and are really quite painless, if you relax and don't think about the procedure.

Pain-wise, a root canal is a very routine procedure and only a little inconvenient; no aspects of the pain are particularly memorable or gruesome, not at all.

I've had four or five of them, and the preparation is the worst, but still maybe a localized "6" painwise at worst, and the pain is over almost as soon as it starts.
 
I did, 35 years ago or so. I'm guessing the procedure has changed considerably over the decades. I remember having nitrous oxide, though and I can't even remember if there was any pain. I just remember floating about a metre above the chair.

I've had three done

Two have been total disasters. The worst ended up costing me $4000 to save the tooth and the one last year cost me $2000 when all was said and done, because I still lost the crown and the tooth.

Why has your dentist referred you on?
My dentist did the job himself
It isn't painful. It is done under anaesthetic. Just don't look at the drill. It is very long and thin

My dentist just squirts a little anaesthetic onto the gum before injecting. That seems to work fine
 
I had one done a few years ago, with a crown on the same molar. It hurt, but not unreasonably, and I was fine to go back to work the next morning. Just had to watch eating on that side of my mouth for a few days.
 
I had one about 3 years ago. My Dentist is AWESOME!. A little poke to start the numbing process, and I didn't feel another thing. He used a 'block' on the opposite side of my mouth to keep it open. He kept me informed the whole time he was working, and once he was done, the worst part was when he removed the 'block' and my jaw was stuck open--nothing a quick massage couldn't fix.

He gave me a prescription for some pain meds 'in case' I had any pain later, never used them.

Then again, my Dentist is about 30% more expensive than the local average, according to my insurance, which is why I need to change Dentists really soon, and I keep dragging my feet about it (I need some work done).
 
Unless your dentist hates you or is a Neanderthal the only part that will hurt is the cost....... :eek:

If it's farther back in your mouth where it won't show just have the son-of-bitch pulled!
 
Twice. Hairline fractures in teeth (molars, I guess) on opposite sides of my jaw. Dentists said the fractures had been there since the teeth first came in, and enlarged in time. Pain was minimal--that's why you take drugs. No big deal. The big deal was that the procedures eventually failed, and I ended up with implants. The implants took forever--9 months, I think--but they're great.

Absolutely take the next day off.
