My hair looks something like that right now except the patch of dyed hair is a bit smaller and my hair is shorter than that. I've had many colors done though. Blue, red, gold, etc. Sometimes my entire head but usually just streaks which I think are better.

If your hair is black I'd suggest streaks, not a full on dye because once your hair grows back out it will not look nice. If you're a fierce bitch (like me) you can do 2 colors at once which I think look nice (depends on color combination). Gold + burgundy is my favorite.

My natural hair colour is (was) dark brown.

During my 'punk years' (late 70s to mid-80s) I used to bleach my hair (usually in some sort of Mohican style) white and then dye it ... pink, red, blue, purple, green, just about every colour that I could get in CrazyColour hair dye.

During the latter part of the 80s (my 'goth' phase) my hair was always dyed black.

In my early 30s I had very short bleached blond hair.

By my late 30s I grew a goatee and reverted to my natural dark brown colour.

Since then ... apart from a brief period of going for the Rob Halford look (shaved head and dyed black goatee) ... I kept my natural colour.

I am currently sporting a full head of rapidly greying hair and a short goatee. I'm quite looking forward to my hair going completely silver; I think it could make me look 'distinguished'.

part of me wants to go to a hair salon but I'm poor lol and I have zero clue what a coloring session should cost.
would I have to go multiple times if I wanted to go from black to platinum blond?
also how damaging would bleaching be to my hair...I don't to get bald spots or something

I've never done anything to my hair myself so I don't know about self-procedures. However, if you're trying to do something like black to full platinum blonde you would probably be better off saving some money and then having a professional do it, especially if it's your first time. I never dye my hair myself because everyone who I know who dyes their hair themselves always seem to be having a very bad hair day.

As for the cost it usually does come down to the length of your hair and what procedure you use. A full on dye will cost more than streaks. I usually get my hair streaked when I go for a haircut so what they do is streak the hair then give me a haircut. I don't live in the US but this costs me the US equivalent of $15 - $20.

If you're going from black to platinum blonde though you will have to have treatments done multiple times and I'd seriously recommend a professional for this and it will probably cost a lot more than you want it to. If your hair is jet black your hair is said to be level 1. Platinum blonde is the max, level 12. You will need a lot of bleaching and protein treatment on your hair and it can get a little damaging so you need expert help on this.

The only thing I do to my hair myself is sometimes apply temporary dye, which is basically like hair gel, and like the hair gel will wash off with water. Everything else I have done at a salon.

I'm a dirty blonde so I dyed it blonder once. It ended up looking a bit too fake-yellow. I've dyed it black twice - once for Halloween, and once just because. It didn't look horrible but I never thought it looked any better than my natural color, either. Haven't done it since. Sticking with blonde-going-grey.

My natural hair is light brown (which is what i have right now) but 2 weeks ago it was bleach blonde, and it probably will be again a few months from now. Who knows.

But i do know i never want black hair.

When I was in 8th grade the latest fad was to bleach your hair this unnatural shade of yellow. I almost did it; My Mom even got me some cheap stuff so I could do it, although I chickened out. In the end I'm glad I didn't do it.

My Mom started dyeing her hair when she hit 50 and began to grow more gray hairs than black. She's since stopped dyeing after hearing about a link between hair dye and cancer. But when she did do it she always needed my help because she could never get the back of her head right. So I--like a couple of other posters above--recommend getting it done professionally your first few times until you learn how to do it yourself.

Since teen years I wanted to have a streak of pure white in my black hair ala rogue. Never had the balls to do it though, and I thought it would just be ridiculous and conceited. Now I'm having gray hairs but I just want to have all gray, spotty gray is bad looking

My sister dyed my hair when I was 9. I was so afraid that after awhile I washed it off. But I guess part of the dye remained. Well, that was the only time my hair was dyed. Love my black hair that can look brown under certain lighting anyway.

Yeah, I had it done at a salon...lots of black dye and it stung from all the nasty chemicals...never again....STILL didn't get all the grey out and took months for the hair to recover...

When I was in high school, I bleached my hair and dyed it green. Over time, the majority of the dye came out, so my hair was yellowish-green until Halloween. I was a dying lawn.

That's it for the hair dying, though. I need to do what I can to make sure I don't end up balding like my dad!

i had my hair dyed red once and it turned pink. i overbleached... that was right after high school. i have since put red in my hair, and rocked a blond streak when i had long hair. my hair has only had highlights in it since i cut it.
