Have DVD's spoiled us?

I remember, as a kid, one of the exciting thing about the holidays was getting to watch certain programs on TV, that you could never see anywhere else. Examples:

March of the Wooden Soldiers
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Wizard of Oz
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

But now you can see them anytime that you like. Are we spoiled? Have we lost the magic?

(Not that I am complaining, I have a DVD collection that I wouldn't give up.)

Yeah I have quite a DVD collection, to me I'm glad I got movies that I owned in VHS and bought them on DVD, better quality, better sound, digitally restored. I just think technology is getting more advanced and the DVD is another way of watching a movie in better quality. I'm pretty sure in the future there will be other formats replacing DVD's. Bluray.

If you ask me. When I se people with tons of DVDs (my brother and others), I think to myself what they hell is wrong with them...

I have only bought ONE DVD (movie) in my entire life (which I wish I didn't have)... and I don't want anymore.

I think they have. I remember as a kid getting so excited to see the CBS SPECIAL logo appear before the show would come one (like for Charlie Brown Christmas or Rudolph and etc.). And I would get SOOOOO upset if I missed it...knowing that I'd have to wait another year! I'd grab the TV Guide and make sure I knew exactly when they would come on. <sigh> Technology isn't ALWAYS a good thing!

I have a few DVDs, but yeah, I still don't understand people who have 500 DVD libraries... it's not like they're going to watch them all more than a couple times..

It's just sad how people have this need to collect THINGS instead of experiences.

millions of other people are watching it at the same time you are...

I remember when my family bought our first VCR, I thought it would be SO
cool to tape shows and watch them over and over again...as a kid this seemed like an amazing thing...I can watch 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' whenever I want !

As it turned out.....

Ehh, not so much.

I doubt 'kids today' understand this, but there was a time when a TV special was an *event* you looked foward to all day.

i have an extensive DVD collection, granted it's mostly SCIFI television. But i watch them all the time. Any given night i might pull out season 4 of this or that show and watch 2 or 3 episodes. It's not like they're never used, that's just what people say who don't enjoy television and movies. Many people are escapist, and like to emerse themselves in another reality for a time, it's fun. And there's always bonus features, i love seeing how things were made, what the director's thoughts were, why something was done this way and not another, etc...

I have all the television Christmas Classics on DVD. Rudolph, Frosty, A Charlie Brown Christmas, It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!, How The Grinch Stole Christmas. All the goodies. I love it.

Most of my DVDs are music DVDs - concerts and video collections. I have a few movies and they are all in my list of favourites, but I only buy Special Editions with commentaries and making-ofs and director's cuts and things like that. I really do love the behind the scenes stuff, and I often find the commentaries raise the enjoyment of watching the movie again because of the added insight.

Like they say on ESPN, the more you know the more fun it is, right?

I take the points being made of the pointlessness of a 300-movie library, but every now and again it's nice to have something you really feel like watching on hand. And because some of the old British tv comedies are too classic to not own.

I don't think so. I think we are lucky to have the tecnology we have today. My mom now, is envious, I get to watch and see all my fav movies and tv shows whenever I want, only 5-6 months after it airs or is released in theaters... and she just now, 50 years later, get to own and watch her favorite TV shows like, I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffin Show and Bewitched whenever she wants.... We're lucky to have 'em, but spoiled? I dunt think so!



To get on Topic, I don't own many Holiday Classics, so to me watching those once a year with my little cousin's, is still a tradition in a way, so it's not like I'm missing out on anything. If you want to go out and buy the X Mas DVD's and watche 'em erryday, more powa to ya!

I own quite a few films on DVD (thirty-ish) and most of them are films I want to watch more often than they're shown on TV. The Lord of the Rings films, for example. Sure, they're broadcast about once a year, but I want to watch them more often. And now I can. Another example would be Midnight Cowboy. I've had it on DVD or three years, watched it twice. It's one of those wonderful films that's never on. (and by that I mean once every decade or so - last time was 8 years ago)

I buy films on DVD I want to watch more often than when they're on TV. That's just about the only criterion. (that and price)

I own about 60 dvd's... most are movies I love and want to be able to watch whenever I want... others I have cos they were cheap and come in handy when I'm not doing anything.

I don't think they have spoilt us.

Yes we have DVDs but we still enjoy the spirit of the Season.
Last Friday CBS aired 3 of partner's favs so we got snacks and hot chocolate and curled up on the couch and shared them together. Another night it could be a 5th viewing of a fav movie on DVD but we chose to treat those specials the same we each had since we were kids.

At the library, we usually don't shelve certain holiday specials inthe kids section until it rolls around.

I find it very similar to music. Just as there are songs that fit my every mood, enhancing it even, there are movies which do the same.

I don't justify buying something based soley upon the number of uses I'll get out of it, but that's just me.

Well said! I own very few DVD's--- but there are several that I've watched any number of times and discover new layers of meaning and enjoyment every time I view them. One of those is Y Tu Mama Tambien--- I have the feeling that might be in your collection too!

Another incentive for my having bought several DVD's is the great price on used ones from Netflix. I just bought Mala Educacion for $5.99 (is there a trend here?) I would not have paid $20 for it--- but I couldn't resist it at a good price!
