With all the fake Republican outrage lately about the so-called "Ground-Zero mosque" and "Build the damn fence" and the "papers, please " Arizona law, have Republicans alienated Hispanics and Muslim voters?

Yes they have. George W Bush courted Muslims voters and once called Islam was a religion of peace.

Even the conservatives exalted leader Ronald Reagan supported amnesty for illegal immigrants. Both men supported opportunities for minorities, for both Muslims and Latinos. Now they're demonizing Muslims and Latinos, which is something Republicans always do...... single out a group to hate and fear and exploit that.

Bush selected Alberto Gonzales as the first U.S. attorney general of Hispanic heritage, supported amnesty for illegal immigrants, and even spoke Spanish on the campaign trail. This push paid off in the elections. Bush captured 35 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2000 and 44 percent in 2004.

Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot in their feeble attempt to get votes by scaring the white man. Now that non-white Christian males are becoming a minority themselves, they still don't want to give up any of the power they've enjoyed for decades.

Face it Republicans, you've fucked up. Stop demonizing groups of people and actually try to run on the issues. Keeping on like this you'll go by way of the Whig party and I can see it happening in our lifetime.

it's true, it's only republicans who are bigoted. no democrats have taken positions against the mosque and against illegal immigration.

I wonder if Bob will be able to distinguish the sarcasm. He has ignored Harry Reid and Howard Dean's calls to move the location of the Mosque.

Yes they have, along with black people, poor people, young people, and gay people.

Been saying it for a while now, unless you are a rich old white religious man, the Republican party of today really has no place for you.

You can always point out exceptions to the rule. There are gay Republicans too. That doesn't mean the party really cares about them or that they are acting in their own best interests.

what have the democrats actually done to act in the best interest of hispanics?

Not much of substance. But it's more about what the Republicans have done. The question was have Republicans alienated them.

They've advanced a perception that hispanics are basically a lower form of life that is undeserving of any consideration in the political process.

They've supported racial profiling and measures that would undermine the Constitutional rights of any person even here legally who just looks like they are of hispanic descent.

they had complete control of congress and did nothing on immigration as far as I'm aware.

The question was, have Republicans alienated Hispanics and Muslims, not what have Democrats done for them as hotatlboi pointed out.

My response is, of course Republicans have. Who wouldn't be alienated by a group of people saying you're not welcome, we don't want your kind here.

There's no question but that the Republican party, like Fox News doesn't understand broader demographics.

Rove's Republican'ts have been sowing the seeds of their own permanent demise.

Sure, they can still attract the occasional self-hating closeted homosexual from Florida say, who's more afraid of things that go bump in the night, like an african american president, but precious few.

The thing is, the hacks at the helm of the Repubs know that they have to exploit the anger and fear of the older, white, poorly educated and marginally employed by making everything a threat against the country.

The homos are about the last bastion. If the issue of gays in the military and marriage are resolved, no matter what, the US will evolve into a more tolerant and less controllable country. Except for overt racism, there will be no rallying cry left for the 'right'.

fair enough.

it's always been puzzling to me that minorities wouldn't find more common ground with the GOP based on how socially conservative so many minority communities are.

So I'll take that as a yes, they have. Okay?

If Republicans were smart, they would reach out to minorities and non-Christians but then they would probably alienate whites, straights, and Christians. It's a double edged sword. Pandering to the extreme right wing and the moderates will turn on them, and becoming more moderate and they'll lose their conservatives. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. What's the fine line?

I'm guessing the Republican party is pretty much doomed if they remain as they are. They're actually two different parties now, and the division is growing. Listening to the radicals like Limbaugh, Palin, Beck are coming back to bite them in the ass.

i'm hispanic and i dont feel alienated, my town is mostly hispanic and also mostly republican....and i support the arizona law....and i'm a first generation american

You're a smart man!

They have. Because they're stupid.

On the national news the last few nights they've been playing video from protestors near the site in New York, and the concentrated stupidity in that group of people would make a first grader cringe. Unfortunately, that stupidity has infected the republican party like flesh eating bacteria.

Democrats: Hated by the middle class & rich.
Republicans: Hated by minorities and the poor.

Republicans can poke people all they want. In the end, most people in the group will still like the parties fiscal policies and in the end those policies win the favor of those people. I don't think they have done any real damage to their voter base in those groups.

this is venturing off-topic, of course, but I've always been a little mystified by the democrats' ability to attract minority voters purely by paying lip-service to their issues and never actually taking any significant actions on them.

Well that's easy.

Lip-service is better than outright antagonism.

If you are referring to gay issues, well then this is what we've accomplished since 2008.

-federal hate crimes law enacted (first national gay rights law of any kind)

-gay partners of federal workers get health insurance

-FHA home loans can no longer consider the sexual orientation of applicants

-The Census Bureau plans to report the number of people who report being in a same-sex relationship, which could lead to increased recognition and awareness.

-Hospitals must now allow gay people to visit their ill partners.

-Federal child-care subsidies can be used by the children of same-sex domestic partners.

-DADT repeal pending

It's likely that very little of this would have been accomplished if Democrats had not won the last election.

Yes they have, along with black people, poor people, young people, and gay people.

Been saying it for a while now, unless you are a rich old white religious man, the Republican party of today really has no place for you.

And educated people too. Which is why their "brains" all dropped out of school yet feel comfortable offering advise on complex situations that academics spends years studying.

From Drudge to Beck to Hannity to Limbaugh to Rove to my governor, Jan "High School Diploma" Brewer. They were all too good for school so they just dropped out of school with their fancy high school diplomas.

Trivia time: Did you know that Karl Rove was elected president of the College Republicans just months after dropping out of college?

What about the Young Republican National Federation? Perhaps the up-and-coming leaders from the Republican Party will bring what is needed to tackle today's issues for gays, Hispanics everyone of all backrounds, while remaining true to the limited government and fical conservative principles. In doing a quick search online, I found out that the 2011 Young Republican National Convention will be held in Puerto Rico. Moreover, there are groups and other organzitions that embrace equality via outreach from Hispanics. This would include the Young Hispanic Republicans, which appears to have been founded within the last six months.

Was that the same group that had a Puerto Rican president that was against affirmative action, yet he was attending school on an Latino scholarship?

And educated people too.

Ah yes, I forgot that one.

Yes education is bad. That makes you an elitist, and not one of the common people. You are then out of touch with ordinary America.

If you're a dumb redneck just clinging to your guns, a "mama grizzly", or a jesus freak, then you are a real American of course.

It looks to me like Republicans are alienated even their own demographic by turning up the crazy to Tea-Party levels.
