Yes, secondmonkey presented THREE reasons why hunting is a great option compared to meat farming (though, of course, entirely unsustainable with our enormous appetite for meat, busy lives, etc.):

1. The meat is almost certainly killed in a more (or FAR more) humane way. Apparently the killing methods for meat that is certified as kosher or halal are particularly brutal.

2. The meat is probably "cleaner" as it will be raised on what the wild animal NATURALLY eats. There won't be any of those damned antibiotics in it, either.

3. the animal has probably lived a relatively "normal" life for its species, rather than the torturous ways that meat is raised in factories. (Yes, they ARE factories.)

I've never gone hunting and probably never will...I like my Animals to already be Dead, Plucked, Chopped and sealed tight inside plastic wrap ready for a Pan of Wesson Oil.....

I was over to a relatives house a while back and tried Deer sausage that a Hunter/Killer gave her..It was odd tasting and not something I'd eat again....

What upper-class set did you belong to for joining this? Was it in Yorkshire?

Were there any earls or viscounts or lords along with you for the ride?

You don't need to belong to an "upper class set"; most of those who go hunting are farmers and ordinary country people. I can only remember meeting one hereditary peer. I rode with the Atherstone when I was younger and with the York and Ainsty North more recently. Only a few times and on borrowed horses.

Believe it or not, I used to have a cat that liked to go squirrel hunting with me. I’d pick off a smaller red squirrel for her to pounce on while I looked for larger gray squirrels for the table.

I used a ‘22’ with hollow-points.

I used to hunt a lot. I enjoyed it because of the people around me -- my dad, uncles, cousins, and friends. Great stories are still told at family gatherings.

I hunted quail, pheasant, duck, geese and doves -- no deer and very little dove -- I don't care for taste of either -- no matter how imaginative the person cooking it makes it.

I was taught to only kill what you could eat -- nothing more.

Many people forget that part of today's hunting is conservation meant to control the amount of wildlife. Overpopulation for some animals like deer cause problems in our environment. In the past without conservation many of the species were completely eradicated -- however, through conservation many of species have been brought back to places of their natural habitat.

Most US states have very good rules regarding hunting and most people abide by those laws. Google the conservation department of your own state to find out more information.

One more comment, if you like to hunt for the pleasure of just killing something ... I suggest you check out trap shooting or make a visit to your local mental health facility.

MM -- no matter how deer has been "fixed" it always has that taste. I cringe at Christmas time when friends and relatives bring out the cheese and sausage platter.

Once, with my father, at our summer place in Georgia. Don't remember who killed the squirrel but experience was so traumatic I never picked up a gun again.

My father continued to be an avid deer hunter.

I assume you're talking about what some people call the "wild taste." Maybe sometimes there's more than one thing going on - the natural "game" taste (which I actually enjoy), and possibly some decomposition? It takes a while to prepare the deer for traveling - doesn't the gutting, etc. have to be done right away before the rigor mortis sets in? Then it's roped to the car or put into the trailer or whatever, and some people make the trip back home which might even be like 560 miles** or something - all of this time without refrigeration.

The weather isn't always "like a refrigerator" on the trip home, to keep something from happening to the meat.

Strange how I keep posting in this thread about something I have no interest in doing, haha.

**That's how far my former Boss used to drive one way to his hunting place deep in the Upper Peninsula, and in Michigan it is common for hunters to drive hundreds of miles to get to favorite locations.

Yeah, cows are herbivores\vegetarians.

Almost all game mammals are herbivores (deer, Bison, rabbit, squirrel, elk, moose, sheep, goat, horse, etc). Most bear are Omnivore's but they are not raised as food stock. Matters not if you are in the mountains of Alaska and you find a grizzly munching on berries though cause he will drop those and prefer the taste of human.
I think the most carnivores man eats either hunted or farmed would be found in the water, mainly fish but you could include sea mammals and shellfish too. If you hunt for octopus or squid you are eating a carnivore, same with a elephant seal or sperm whale.

Cats are the only true land carnivore in the mammal class (reptiles/amphibians/insect are not mammals).
My dogs loves the carrot.

Can you imagine the cost of farm raising lions or rattlesnake for their flesh?
Its much cheaper to raise & farm flightless chickens or turkeys then owls or Hawks.
Ostrich hasn't caught on because its expensive to farm but the eggs are something

Oh yeah I didn't find much fun sitting in a tree stand a freezing cold day for hours looking at burnt out brown leaves rustle in the wind waiting for a deer to show up. I ditched the hunting on hr 4 for beer and warm cabin.

If so, what have you hunted?
How did you kill the animal?
Why did you kill the animal? For sport?
What did you do with the dead animal?

Me, I've never gone hunting and would never even consider it. I don't understand how people can find sport in hunting. If you do, then please explain it to me.

Hunting simply for trophies and for “fun” is usually the sport of spoilt, bored white men with too much money.

These days the cattle and chickens are hunted and put on polystyrene trays on our behalf by big abattoirs.

Hunting wild animals itself is not cruel by default – hunting is a valid way of controlling/managing animal numbers in reservations or national parks. Responsible hunting is more humane than anything going on at a kosher butcher.

I did mention the gamey taste (inherent to the species itself) as well as wondering whether decomposition can add to the equation. And that I like the wild-game taste...but all forms of beauty (including taste) are in the eye (or other sensory organ) of the beholder.
