You can keep lettuce longer by layering it in paper towels in the bag or container...actually this is something to do with most vegetables in the crisper. It wicks away the excess moisture that spoils vegetables and fruits.

If possible, try to keep all the tomatoes out of the fridge in an open area. They won't lose their flavour as quickly.
