I can understand the need for them back in the day before electricity and automobiles but isn't it time to give the beasts a break and let them return to the wild ?

Yes I have when I was younger, the farm had a donkey and a pony, but when we were in Santorini, I refused to make some poor donkey lug me up the hill from the docks......because I would have felt like I was making it work like the one in the pic above.....

Yeah, that. I refuse to either ride something with that kind of size discrepancy or carry someone with that kind of size discrepancy. I'd break what's left of my body if I tried to do that.

I have ridden horses. They were absolutely gigantic, and while I'm five and change the very tip-top of my head never reached their shoulder by a long stretch.
