I've never gone too far out in the ocean. The sea floor drops off into deep water fairly quickly off the Atlantic Coast of South Florida, and the currents can be treacherous, so I always stay close to shore. It's a little shallower on the Gulf side of the state, but I've never gone out too far even there.
