Have you ever...

I got charged with DUI when I was 19. Lost my license for six months. One of the lowest points of my life. Boy, did I learn my lesson!

What's your favorite thread on JUB?

I usually like to get out and shake it down, but I don't really know any dances or dance moves. People told me I danced good when I was younger.

Do you like to cook, or do recipes?

Yeah, I've had a few of those. There have been quite a few times when I've tried something from a recipe book that sounded good, but it just didn't turn out the way it was supposed to, like the ones that say let the mixture set before going on to the next step, but it never sets, etc. I remember trying an eggplant lasagna recipe, where eggplant slices were supposed to substitute for the pasta layers. It tasted OK, but it made a soup instead of a firm lasagna loaf. Then there were the two attempts at making a country captain dinner. It sounded good, cooking chicken with curry and currants and several vegetables. First, the recipe I had was for a dinner much too big for my needs, so I had to figure out how to scale it down. It was merely OK when I made it, but certainly not good enough to justify all the effort that went into making it.

Do you drink alcohol? If so, do you drink 1) every day 2) a few times a week 3) only when going out, or it's served at a party 4) or only on special or rare occasions? (Whoops! That question doesn't fit the "Have you ever...?" format, but asking have you ever drank alcohol would likely elicit a yes answer without elaboration).

Not anymore. I used to, though. I have not a drink for 22 and a half years.

Have you ever taken a cruise aboard a luxury ship?

No, I haven't. The closest I've ever come was when a company I worked for had their holiday parties on a gambling boat that went out 9 miles from Florida's Gulf Coast. I'm not a gambler, and the food at the beginning of the trip was like basic school cafeteria fare.

Have you ever visited the graves of deceased loved ones or friends?

Yes, many times

Have you ever personally known anyone who suffered a violent death?

No, thankfully. My great-grandfather's brother fell off the roof of a building and died. My great-grandfather on the other side of the family was killed by lightning. But that was all way before I was born.

Have you ever gone swimming or scuba diving in the ocean?

No, since I don't know how to swim.

Have you ever been stung by a jellyfish? (Those damn Portugese man o'wars are of the devil! :scaredofthat:).

No, I never have. I remember walking along the beach many years ago with a would-be boyfriend, on a day that thousands of man-o-wars had been washed onshore by waves whipped up by a strong breeze. We walked barefoot, and somehow we missed all of them.

Have you ever been stung by bees or wasps, or their nasty cousins, hornets or yellow jackets, etc.?

I stepped on a bee barefoot once when I was a kid. Try not to do that. Holy crap that hurt. Got stung by a wasp a few times. And thousands of f'ing mosquitos and chiggers. Chiggers are tiny red mites that live on plants. If you come in contact with them, they burrow under your skin and leave a purple bruise about an inch in diameter. They itch like f'ing hell.

Have you ever let your car run out of gas and you had to walk?

Never been stung by any of those, but I accidentally stepped on ant bed while playing on a tree stump when I was a toddler. I have zero recollection of it, but it explains why I hate ants with a fiery passion. Let one get in the house and I'll grab a can of Raid and douse that little bastard like he was kin to Satan himself.

Have you ever been bitten by a dog?

I've never encountered chiggers/red bugs in Florida, though they're supposedly down here. But we encountered terrible chigger infestations, we called them red bugs, every summer when we visited our great-grandparents', later my grandmother's, farm in rural Alabama each summer. I remember slathering alcohol on my legs to try to kill those things and heal the wounds.

Yes, I've been bitten by several dogs. I got bitten a couple of times by my pet dog as a kid. There was one time I got bitten by a mean dog I approached that was always chained up in front of a neighbor's house once when I was about 4 years old. There was another incident in which I got repeatedly nipped by a dog that kept jumping at me and biting when I was 12 years old. I could easily have stopped it if I had yelled at the dog and struck out at him, but I couldn't make myself mean enough to do it. Then there was the time I got bit by a friend's chihuahua when I put my hand out to greet him. Then I've also been bitten on the hand when I've given food and treats to a friend's neighbor's dog. He'd incidentally bite me when going for the treat.

Have you ever become upset on losing a pet, either by death, or having to euthanize it, or it got out, or you had to give it up?

I was going to say that I never owned a pet, but then I remembered my three goldfish who ended up swimming in the Big Fishbowl in the Sky a few days after I got them when I was 8. !oops! Thankfully I was cleared by the Animal Court. ;)

Have you ever felt guilty for not "grieving properly"? Like not being a sobbing mess at the funeral of a loved one?

I lost my grandmother when I was 11 years old. I had always assumed that I'd be a crying mess, but I surprised myself by not crying, though I did miss her. True story: The song "And When I Die" by Blood, Sweat, and Tears came on the radio on the funeral procession from the church to the cemetery!

Since then I've been to numerous funerals and memorials, and I haven't cried at any of them. I've since learned that unless you were very close to the person emotionally, funerals are usually more about solemn remembrance and respect.

I didn't cry at my Father's funeral, and actually I didn't really expect to. My relationship with him was complicated. And technically I didn't cry at my Mother's funeral, though her death tore me up, and I cried terribly both before and after the ceremony. I guess I'm capable of pulling myself together in public for an hour, until I can be alone.

Have you ever done your genealogy or explored your ancestry?

Yes, I could trace some lines back to the 18th century

Have you ever written your memories?

I haven't written my memories down in any systematic fashion, no, although I have written down recollections of specific events in my life.

Have you ever written articles for a newspaper or publication?

Not an article, but when I was 12 I won a contest and a poem I wrote was featured in a local newspaper.

Have you ever been on your local news?
