Yes, I did that a couple of times in my college days, when I had to walk back to my apartment after drinking at a bar. I meant it wasn't PUBLIC public, but there were times that I whipped it out in residential neighborhoods in the dark. Nobody was around, but anybody could have easily seen me.

Yup. In an elevator. Luckily a couple of friends were there to drag me away. (I assume that the guy was straight, but maybe I had a chance. My memory is hazy because I was drunk off of my ass, but I do remember that he was chuckling at me--I was in RARE form--and he didn't act disgusted.)
