I have frequently traveled through many rural and redneck areas, mostly in Florida, but sometimes in other Southern states, where it would indeed be dangerous to be known as gay. But apparently I'm not obvious, and I am usually don't get any flack if I'm just driving through. Country folk usually don't bother you, if they even notice you at all. But I've found that being around a hyper-macho environment is a red flag, whether it's in the country or at a tractor pull in a big city stadium. Some of those guys seem to be looking out for sissies to bully. I suspect you don't even have to be gay-- you could be a bookish straight guy, they'll come after you.
Have you ever had to get out of a situation where you felt threatened, whether for being gay or for some other reason?
