I had a friend who, in conversation with another friend, the other friend briefly alluded to a suicide attempt by the friend some years before I met him. The method used was not mentioned.

I also had a friend in college, who committed suicide by shooting himself in the head some years after I lost contact with him. I found out by reading about it in the newspaper.
