It is common now and that is sound advice for something really valuable to you.

Yup. This has happened on a number of international airports and sadly, in the US as well.

Yup. Never put anything valuable into your checked luggage. And carry a very good insurance policy. If you travel a lot, that's an absolute must.

All I had stolen off me was nailclippers, tweezers and the like because apparently they could be used as a weapon (can't imagine how though).

The only thing stolen from me was my temper on a few occasions...

I am sure that they must employ the surliest assholes they can find to work at LAX international.

Never lost much from my main luggage, all the good stuff is in carry on...

Lucky I never had to fly during that whole england no hand luggage fiasco... I dont know what I woudl do without my gadgets for a long flight.

Shanghai, 2004, on my way back to Beijing: a swisstool... with the best nail clipper I´ve ever had :grrr:

Never.

I ship my luggage to my destination by Fed-Ex.
Instead of schlepping bags and waiting on line, I stroll right through security.
Nothing ever gets "Lost."
Everything is at my hotel when I arrive.

The last time i had lugged that i checked (last march) we locked it. they told us it might get cut if there was something they needed to check. when we picked it up the lock had not been cut and everything was there. so i'm wondering is the no lock rule new since March of 2006? Or was I lucky and they let it go through?

For as long as there has been luggage and baggage handlers, luggage has been ripped off. Never put anything of value in luggage you plan to check. You always carry it with you. Locks are just a red flag to a baggage handler that something good is inside.... #-o No, I've never lost anything of value while traveling.

EL-AL Confiscated my Iron once - after scanning my shoes and crotch:grrr:

I travel a lot and no one has ever stolen anything from my checked baggage. Then again, i pretty much limit it to clothes. The few times i put valuables in there, i had locks and i waited until my bag went through the xrays, afterwhich i told the officers to lock it up.
