I thought my days of taking a physical education class were over in middle school, but the nightmare of years ago is returning to haunt me again due to some trivial degree plan requirement...

I had a horrific experience in P.E. in the seventh grade involving conflicts with my instructor, being awful at the sports we had to play, ultimately feeling out of place. I was the scrawny 'nerd' stereotype that you often see depicted on television and in movies. What didn't help were my various issues with me questioning my sexuality and being uncomfortable as the only potential gay guy in the class.

I don't play sports. I have no interest in sports. I do have plans to join a gym and work on some personal fitness goals, but that's the extent of my physical education interests.

To some extent, I'm still that scrawny computer science major 'nerd' and I'm not at all comfortable with the idea of being in a P.E. class with jocks, machos, and others who would intimidate me.

I'm scared to death about what to expect starting next Monday when school begins.

What do I do? HELP!!!

are you in college? cuz at my college i was able to take a health course instead of a PE class, thank God. I hated PE and I always sucked at everything lol.

College PE is usually a little more flexible.

If you attend a large university, you can take fencing, weight lifting, golf, tennis, volleyball- all sorts of things that meet the requirement but don't require you to participate in a contact sport.

If you absolutely hate it, you can often get out of it with a doctor's excuse or via an appeal process.

I took golf......and have never played a round. But it seems like my school offered a basic class for learning the machines in the gym. If you could find something like that you would be ahead of the game when you joined a gym yourself.

I would definitely take a health class if possible or something that the others have suggested. Talk to your counselor ASAP.

It's the easiest class. All you have to do is try and you'll get a good grade. If you were bullied in middle school, people in college are different. No one's really going to care if you suck and if they do, just don't hang out with them. Just give sports another shot and maybe you'll find one that you actually enjoy. You may be missing out.

When I arrived at college as a skinny, geeky undergrad I was horrified upon discovering there was a mandatory PE requirement. I had take 2 or 3 courses that involved real physical activity, "jock courses" my advisor insisted. So I chose an aerobics course, a modern dance class, and a swim class.

It was wonderful to discover that I was a natural athlete, that I had a body capable of performing very effectively with the (high school) competitiveness and bullying gone. I excelled and went on to do weight training and put on 30 pounds of muscle.

I also learned to be comfortable in lockerrom settings with straight, "jock" types and shower naked! Great training for what was to come next...

Hey, don't sweat it. You certainly won't be alone. Sexual identity is not defined by the jock vs. skinny nerd differential. Hell, you might even meet a boyfriend in the locker room.

Take something cruisy like others have said.

At my first university I had to do a PE class. I chose tennis because if it rained the night before we didn't have class if the courts were wet.

Now might also be the time for you to break out of your shell and do something different.

I've considered this and the potential advantages of taking this P.E. class. Perhaps I'll make new friends, improve my (lacking) self-esteem, etc.

I do have an open mind.

For me it was just a whole lot o sucking it up, and this is just for me and i went to a small collage but it was worst then HS

you dont have to be the athletic type to at least try a PE class.

I think as long as you show effort and aren't terribly negative about the experience other classmates wont get on your shit too much. It is college people are more mature now than when you had PE problems in the 7th grade.

PE was my favorite part of high school. Where else could you get to shower with 25 guys in one big room?

Today was the first day of school and my first day in this PE course.

From all initial impressions, most of the students in the class seem to be mature, insightful young adults. There's only a couple of students (who are also high school students) that seem to dealing with a insignificant amount of 'immaturity'. Our class is about 60-65% women, the remainder men.

There is one young, very good looking 20 year old who's in the class that works as personal trainer for Gold's Gym (where I'm considering for membership) who's been a gymnast for most of his life and was a award-winning male cheerleader in high school. He will probably be the instructor's unofficial 'sidekick' in the class.

The instructor has structured the class to encompass a number of tasks to 'discipline' us from keeping meticulous individual workout journals, pop quizzes, and a demanding attendance policy. The class is basically setup as a professional workout plan, giving emphasis on accomplishing personal fitness goals, with little to no plans for playing sports as high school level PE classes do.

I told the instructor that I was taking this class to boost my cognitive performance, and he was delighted to hear this goal which is not a typical one of his students.

I may like and benefit substantially from this experience.

Your sexuality is your business. I'm sure there's plenty of choices you have with physical education. Be yourself, enjoy yourself, and try to have the best experience you can. Don't let it get to your head.
