Her name then was Judith. When she was about ten or twelve, a peddler came to her village carrying what Sophie now believes to be a form of influenza. Within two weeks of his visit the town was wiped out except for her and an older boy named Clovis. Though she's forgotten why, the boy did not like her. He raped Sophie and took her to the next town, where he offered her for money and food. They were camped out in the woods when a very hungry vampire attacked Clovis, most likely because he was bigger, and then decided that Sophie would make a good companion. His name was Alain, and they traveled together for around three years. Sophie mentions that he once was a priest, and enjoyed scaring them in their beds. Alain kept promising Sophie that he would bring her over - she wanted the strength - but he would do the same thing Clovis had, selling her for money. One night they came to a village where the head-man knew what Alain really was - Alain had forgotten that he killed the man's wife while passing through. The villagers bound him with silver and left him in a hut to keep him until the priest returned from a trip. They did not tie Sophie up for they knew that she was human and that Alain had abused her. The head-man's family wanted to take her as a slave. She sneaked into the hut and told Alain that she would free him when he changed her. After some bargaining, he agreed. She dug a hole big enough for her body in the dirt floor. They planned that Alain would drain her and bury her under that pallet that he lay on, smoothing the dirt floor as best he could. On the third night, she would rise, break his chains, and they would flee in the darkness. But the priest returned before the three days were up. By the time Sophie dug herself out, Alain was dead. The hut the villagers stored Alain in was the priest's, and he was the one who told Sophie what had happened. She told him that she was the angel of death and that she was passing him over for being so virtuous. After a few years, she discovered an orphan, like her, roaming in the woods, like her, being forced, like her. That orphan was Andre, and they've been together ever since. Andre becomes Sophie-Anne's personal bodyguard, companion, and, at a time, lover. She has also made Sigebert and Wybert (Saxon warriors) vampire and they are also Sophie-Anne's bodyguards. She has a special ability, a gift, in which she can talk to her "children" telepathically. She says she can keep her children with her, talking to and loving each other physically. This differs from normal "maker"/"child" relationships which start out as companions or lovers but do not last long (in vampire standards). Usually, the child will leave the maker, and must only come again when he/she is called upon by the maker.

I have a question for those of that have read or are reading the books. What does having done that do for you when watching the show?

For example, I read the first five Harry Potter books before watching each of the movies and was pleasantly surprised with how closely the films followed the books and how little the films left out from the relatively hefty books. It didn't take away from my enjoyment of the movies knowing what was going to happen. Of course, a 2 hour movie and a 12 hour weekly tv series are two completely different entities.

I really would like to read the books the series is based on but I love the cliffhanger nature of the show. I'm not sure I'd want to know about certain major characters that are or could be coming or storylines.

Basically, how closely does the show follow the books? Are you all still surprised by the show? Anything that disappoints you?

IDK, the books and True Blood are close, but that close.

Eric is different in the book from the show, I would say show Eric is more interesting, but who knows.

The books arent all about vampires either. Sure it def has a vamp in every book I have read so far, but they get into werewolves, and their government structure, witches show up. Apparently we learn about fairies and stuff. Shifters.

One thing I will say is that reading the books will not spoil anything from the show. AB seems to be making a good job of keeping them seperatel, but the same.

For instance (and I havent read this book, I skipped it) Maryann wasn't the maenad, and the maenad in the book apparently wasnt that evil.
 
Thank you Apollo and Yeshua for your opinions. They've helped me to make up my mind. I'm fairly certain I'm going to be reading the book series now.

Crappy timing though considering I'm going to be starting school Thursday.

If that's the case that's a good thing. I know True Blood can get completely over the top but I can't possibly see myself taking fairies in the same show, primarily centered on vampires, seriously.

Yes, Maryann will be vanquished, but it won't be easy. Nelsan Ellis tells us that no one character single-handedly takes her out, but rather it's a "group effort" by all of the good guys.

Okay, I have to say this--I think Rutina Wesley is a revelation these past two seasons. She brings such amazing life to the character of Tara, and I think she has some of the most emotionally wrenching scenes of any actress on television. If this woman does not get acknowledged with some kind of award for the work she is doing in this series, it will be a crime. I just think she's incredible.
 
I agree with you Killjoke, I was shocked that the Emmy Awards snubbed True Blood this year by not giving them any major nominations when it is the hottest show on television right now!

And as much as Bill annoys me sometimes, I love how he was getting under Eric's skin by threatening to tell the Queen about his V-selling business. And I loved that we finally saw Eric fly.

Stupid Tara. And stupid Lettie Mae.

I can't wait 2 weeks for the finale! What happens to Sookie? Does the God actually come? Can't we just move Labor Day?

What was the term they could be nominated for? The episode that was worthy of nominations, "I Will Rise Up" just aired two weeks ago

I love the queen! She definitely seemed to know how to defeat Maryann. But what do you think that was at the end of the episode? LOL @ Eric fixing his hair after messing it up from flying. Two weeks is too damn long. One week was long...
 
erw's character is amazing. i love, love, love her. and i think she knows about the v blood. she knows about lots of things.
