Hey folks!

I'm heading out to San Francisco in about a week and wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions on sites to see, places to go, or where to eat??

I'm really excited about this trip, so I'm trying to make the most out of it :-)

Oh, I'll be there almost 6 days, so I'll have some time to do just about anything!

Thanks! :D

Go see Beach Blanket Babylon at Club Fugazi
http://www.beachblanketbabylon.com/

On my last trip in autumn '06, I finally went to see it after years of hearing about it. And it was very well worth it. Alot of fun. I think it's been running since the '70's (but don't quote me on that). Club Fugazi is rather small...table seating at floor level and then a balcony with regular seats. I think we paid about $55 a ticket. We went on a Fri night, but I think they have weekend matinees, too, that may be cheaper.

It's a musical comedy spoof on current/recent events and everybody wears hats and everybody famous is fair game--political leaders, Demi & Ashton, Streisand, you name it. A Snow White-type character is trying to find her a man, and meats lots of eccentric characters on her journey. The show is all about outrageous costumes and hats. I know...it sounds stupid, but it really was crazy funny.

Otherwise, there are the typical landmarks/sites that you can read about on the net. It's not an easy place to drive a car...we took public transp except for a all-day Sunday drive down Pacific Coast Hwy, which is gorgeous...stop in Santa Cruz (great amusement boardwalk) and on to Monterrey and Carmel. Along the way is the Pebble Beach Golf Couse. You can drive through it and take lots of beautiful coastal pictures (I'm not a golfer). The pier in Monterrey has awesome seafood restaurants...you can walk down the pier and the rest. keep offering free clam chowder samples. I was stuffed before the end of the pier #-o!

Oh, and dress for windy weather.

Fisherman's Warf was really nice to walk about---usually very busy lots of restuarants and people about---the sea lions were a big attraction as well---I'd skip alcatraz---it was very crowded and it was the least fun of the day trips I was on. I went on a walking tour of China town and that was pretty good--it was a package deal --dinner at a chinese restaurant and the tour afterward--food was bad though. Got some pics if you to see?

You GOTTA go tour the wineries in either Napa, Sonoma, or Russian River Valley!!!!! It's a GREAT way to spend a day or two! Have fun! San Fran is one of my and my baby's favorite places to visit! I'm jealous!!! :D

You can also take pretty reasonably priced boat excursion that take you under the Golden Gate Bridge...

Haight Ashbury is a fun place to shop...parking was difficult but great neighborhood with some unique shops that aren't touristy

Of course, check out the Golden Gate Park, too.

First day, get on one of those Double Decker tour buses which will take you around the town and help you figure out just where you want to go later.

Twin Peaks...must see, too! Coit Tower...yep!

I liked Alcatraz...wasn't too crowded when we went. Something you want to do once anyway, doubt I'd do it again

Freddie,
The sky is the limit, and the links posted by Sammie are more than enough to keep you busy. So go for it.

Of your posters, RL and I are the mature ones.

Ditto to that! Especially since you'll be in SF for so many days.

Going out for dim sum in Chinatown, after a night of drinking, etc., on a Sunday morning is a special memory of mine. Also friends took me to Sausalito for brunch, good side trip.

You guys are awesome! I appreciate all of the great ideas and will try to fit in as much as I can while I'm there :-)

I just hope that I don't fall in love with SF, but I know that I will :D

It was really beautiful the week I was there the weather I was told was completely irregular---it was sunny and warm the entire time---this was in november btw---and I loved it --it truly was one of the best vacations I've ever been on---I hope you have as great a time.

If you like hiking, go to Angel Island and hike to the top. Not to crowded, either.

Skip Alcatraz. So boring >< 'Course, that might have something to do with the fact that I have been there more then one person should :|

Stay away from Ocean Beach! Even thinking about it is hazardous to your health. It's one of the more dangerous beaches in the west coast. On a side note, who's lame brain idea was it to bring a group of 7th graders to that beach? ><

i really can't believe no-one said, "be sure to wear a flower in your hair."

i stayed with some friends for a couple of months near haight and masonic.

i've heard the dotcom boom drove out all the funky people with little money due to skyrocketing rents; i would imagine the crusty kids are still swarming the street corners, though - hard to believe anything could displace them. the giant arboretum/greenhouse/ whatever thing in GG park was my big high point. See if you can find some radical faeries....and DO do blowbuddies ;)

That's for old farts like you and me. And it only works if you want to meet some gentle people there.

There's a ton of stuff to see and do. You won't need a car - it's a great city for walking and public transportation. I'd list stuff to do, but honestly, it'd all be stuff *I* want to do, and you might not feel the same.

In Chinatown there is this great restaurant called The Pearl
that has the most amazing Chinese food I've ever had in my life...

Just across the street is, 'The Buddha Bar'... just a 'hole in the wall' kind of place, but great drinks and an amazing collection of 'regulars'...

Of course, any self-respecting 'mo has to visit the Castro district... What ever you are looking for, from just a good time to...well, 'whatever'...you'll find it there.....

On the touristy side, you have to see Pier 57 (is it '57' ? I don't remember) and take a tour of Alcatraz.

Other than that, just enjoy the city. Shop, eat, take it all in....

It's my favorite place in the world....

There's a restaurant somewhere around Union Square called Sears. It was great.

For a coffee shop, try It's Tops on Market. I fell in love with it on my first visit to the city.

As far as touristy stuff, Coit Tower, the Golden Gate Museum and tour. Down near Fisherman's Wharf, hit Ghiradeli Chocolates. Well worth the time.

As others have said, forget renting a car. Get a MUNI pass and enjoy the public transit system. The MUNI pass will get you onto the cable cars, subway, and busses; and I think I also used it for BART when I went over to Berkeley...

-I'm small enough, I'd fit in your carry-on...

I ate dinner at Sears, per the recommendation of my dentist, and really was disappointed....tough steak and a waiter from hell. Obviously, many folks have better stories to tell than mine:(. One restaurant that locals said was good down on the wharf area was The Pier Market at Pier 39
http://www.piermarket.com/. Affordable, a great waiter who helped us with plans and awesome chowder. We ate at The Blue Mermaid on the wharf and it wasn't that great.

For an adult time there is always the Nob Hill Theatre in Nob Hill...safe area and right by the cable car track. Open 40 years, it still lives on. I went around 1990 and things have changed but it's an adult theatre, and has live shows . Their signs scream, 'NAKED MEN...NAKED MEN...NAKED MEN'. Usually gets some giggles from unknowing tourists on the cable cars as it zips by the intersection. http://www.nobhilltheatre.com/
