I would have never thought he would be the Joker. I honestly can't picture him as the Joker, but I'll give him a chance. For some reason, I have faith that he'll do a great job. A lot people wanted Johnny Depp, but I think Depp would have gone over the top. I don't know, who knows. Read the Entertainment Weekly article below.

'Batman': Heath Ledger as the Joker?!

Can I get a "Holy casting against type, Batman"?
Chris Nolan, sire of the sober, psychological Batman Begins and its 2008-slated sequel The Dark Knight, is taking his theory of Bat-realism to the next level: He's made Heath Ledger his Joker. The choice is hardly intuitive, which is part of what makes it so darned interesting. Was this news released under cover of Gibson to staunch the expected fan kerfuffle? If so, it's not going to work. Debates will rage.
Hardcore Bat aficionados enjoyed but never accepted Jack Nicholson's flubbery demon yuppie; they much preferred the Mark Hamill-voiced animated version, which hewed closer to the comic book character.
Ledger will likely take an entirely different approach -- perhaps something of his Knight's Tale theatricality, coupled with his Brokeback brooding and just a pinch of Casanova (where he proves he's adept at eluding men in black cloaks). In all seriousness, there will be much seriousness: The Joker, toxically clownified or no, will have some sort of deep, real hurt to nurse, if Nolan holds with the mood he established in Begins.
But, wow, with Philip Seymour Hoffman rumored to be Nolan's (as yet reluctant) pick for The Penguin, will there really be any room for another villain? I can feel a showdown coming in the air tonight. Oh, Lord. Oh, Lord.

My initial reaction was "Huh?"

But considering how brilliant Batman Begins was, I'm willing to give it a shot. Heck, I had the same reaction when I heard that Nolan had cast Bale in the lead!

I'll think he'll do fine. If he's terrible, they wouldn't keep him/cast him for something that's been pretty strong stylistically like Batman Begins.

I think Bale is a good Bruce Wayne/batman. If you happen to have access to Batman : Year One or issues #1 to 5 of Batman: The Dark Knight you will see similar characteristics. Just my opinion though! :)

Oh! Year One! Miller and Mazzucchelli!

What a gorgeous book.

I'm sure Depp would've been just brilliant as the Joker. But give Heath a chance. Those who "just can't see it"....suspend your notions & give him a chance as an actor. I'm sure he'll do just fine.

I was more surprised to read Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin? That seems like odd casting to me actually. I don't know.

Really?? He seems like a perfect fit for the Penguin. Danny Devito was brilliant as the original though.....It's weird how a lot of the Tim Burton Batman characters are getting played again but this time by actors currently working right now......At first I seem a little skeptical but so far the actors they've chosen are great and the new franchise seems to be in good hands so I think they'll all do great. I just PRAY they don't bring back Catwoman in any of the Nolan Batman movies they're going to make in the future. NO ONE will ever top the incredible Michelle Pheiffer!!!!!

Bale is the hottest Batman. I might like to see how Heath does. He wouldnt have been my first pick though.

Uhm...Remember Katie Holmes? Has it been noted yet she's NOT coming back?
I also don't think bale is a good Bruce Wayne. He's a good Batman but I don't buy him as Bruce Wayne.

Yeah, I was surprised at how good she was in "Batman Begins." She can act. Sometimes making movies is like music, some producers can make the worst singer sound good. They can bring the best outof the singer, just like some directors can bring the best out of an actor. ;)

Is Michael Caine Still going to be Alfred?

He was on Leno a couple of nights ago and said that he was signed on. iMDB shows that thus far only Bale, Ledger, Caine and Gary Oldman are listed for The Dark Knight. I'm super glad that Oldman will be back as he really kicked ass as Gordon. I'm hopeful that they will re-cast Morgan Freeman as well. As it is right now the production is in development so there are bound to be more additions and changes to come.

He has a lot of range. I keep picturing him in "Fifth Element" and I think he was in "The Professional." Those roles are so different than his Gordon role.

I couldn't agree more! He has immense range and I love to watch him work. He was in both The Fifth Element and The Professional as well as other films. One of my favorites was in Romeo Is Bleeding. The thing with his portrayal of James Gordon is the subtlety. The character as he is written in the comics is very much one of subtlety. I couldn't help but wonder if he went through the comics himself in preparation. Jim Gordon turned out to be one of my favorite things about Batman Begins (amongst other things, but I am a huge geek when it comes to Batman and this movie).

I didn't read that many comics growing up, but I'm quickly getting into them. Have you read "Ex Machina"? It's a political superhero comic that's about to be made into a live-action movie. It's about a man who can communicate with machinery: He can stop disable guns and make moving cars stop. It's interesting. Plus, there's a lot of clever political commentary.

Anyway, getting back to Batman Begins, I love how they showed the Joker poker card. I love this because it gets you excited about what's to come. Also, I usually associate Batman movies with garishness and slightly cheesiness, but obviously Batman Begins is not that. I'm almost positive that the joker won't be dressed in any extremely bright colors. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning because I'm so excited about how Christopher Nolan is going to handle the Joker character. I wonder how the Joker will look like. And I hope they really show how and why the Joker tells jokes. I haven't read the comic books, so maybe people already know the reason, so... lol I have this good feeling that Heath is going to do an amazing job.
