Every year I get eaten up by mosquitos. I have 6 huge welts on my back and some big ones on my legs. They are the size of quarters!! I am sick now but can't tell if it's the flu I'm coming down with or allergic reaction? My throat is lumpy and I lost my voice but I'm not congested at all. I have been taking benedryl. I have "off" but I can't spray myself down with that crap twice a day. What is a good cheap way to get rid of them? Where is the best store to go to that has a huge repellant section? Do the candles work? I have seen the commercials but not the product at any stores. Target has crap. This happens to me every year at this time. I am not at the same house or job but yet I am a mess again. It's driving me crazy!

Are you sure it's mosquitos and not something far nastier like bedbugs?

Lol, that's what my friend said. But my mattress is not even a year old yet and my bedding is all new. I'm sure it's mosquitos. I went to the store and there really isn't much in the way of mosquito repellant.

The size of quarters doesn't sound much like the mosquitoes I know... also shouldn't you hear and see them? Tea Tree Oil is one of the best natural repellents and it's good for the skin as well.

.. but are you sure it isn't spiders you're up against?

Mosquitos in the US are pretty brutal. There tiger mosquitoes are fast and have a painful bite that makes a pretty large welp. And unlike the native mosquitos, the tiger mosquitoes bite during the day.

DEET is still be best repellent. But as mentioned earlier, mosquitoes are attracted by certain scents, so avoid colognes and being outside when you're sweaty. They are also attracted to carbon dioxide, so you're more likely to get bitten if you are out jogging or exercising after dark.

The native mosquitoes like dark cool places, so avoid the shady, shrub-filled areas during the day. When possible, avoid being outdoors after sunset without repellent on.

I haven't had much luck with citronella or herbal repellants. The mosquito magnet is expensive but it works. The mosquito spends most of it's life cycle in a small limited area. After a couple of seasons of the mosquito magnet, you will have done your best at mosquito genocide for the unwanted residents of your yard.

Also .. keep all your dirty clothes in another room, since sweat does attracts them as well.

bedbugs could also hide behind the wallpaper or in the plinths. (That's why they're called "wandluizen", "wall-lice" in Holland ).

I've lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the Mosquitos (Skeeters) are frigging legendary. This is a place where the Health Department long ago gave up monitoring West Nile Virus, as the theory is if you live here, you've been bitten, and if you are still alive, you are now immune. :D

That being said, the locals subscribe to a few ideas.
1. Eat lots of Garlic flavored food. For some reason, the Skeeters hate that.
2. Wear no scented ANYTHING.
3. Smoke and Drink Heavily. The Skeeters seem to hate smokers, and if you are constantly inebriated, you won't notice you need to have your blood supply refilled.

If these suggestions are not possible:
1. 100% DEET products do help. Do a search for DEET...Amazon.com has quite a few.
2. SOME people swear by Avon Skin So Soft. I don't but it seems to work for some.

Ooooo . . . . HTB is that a moustache and goatee showing? Sexy!

Bluedragon, why are mosquito bites appearing on your back, the part of your body most likely to be covered? You're sure it's mosquitos and not scabies? I'd see if Whole Foods might have some kind of repellent.

Oh, bedbugs feed at night btw.

You clearly haven't experienced those big ones with stripes yet. This kind, which I don't know proper english name, can slip its proboscis through your shirt and suck your blood out. It's very painful and you'll get welt right after that. And they aren't choosy when it comes to time. They bite whenever they want.

Those would be Tiger mosquitoes (aka Asian Tiger mosquitoes).

I know this will sound crazy, but look it up there is a ton of info on it.

Catnip is a better mosquito repellant than Deet. It's natural and works.

The only drawback (naturally if you have a cat you'll have to watch the plant) is that when it flowers it can attract bees.
