Ok one of my computers is not working properly. I've had it for three years now and now whenever I turn it on, it got to the screen where you see the green bar flashing through (the screen where there is the word Microsoft in the middle) and then suddenly it turns off by itself and restart all over again. I can never get it to turn on fully, it just keeps restarting by itself and get to the screen where it looks like it's about to start, but then it restart itself again. I tried turning the computer off and on, but that doesn't do anything anymore.

If anybody can help me, I would very much appreciated.... :help:

Something you could try is booting up in safe mode. As the computer boots up tap F8 until you get the safe mode option. If you get in to safe mode OK then you could try running a virus and spyware scan.

First thing i would do is press F8 during boot, and select Use last stable configuration to boot and see if that works.

See I even tried to get to the Safe mode, but I couldn't even do that, the strange thing is that it let me have an option of starting computer normally, safe mode, and other things, and when I chose either of these things, it just restart the computer and the whole process starts again.

ok noelie, I'll try your way and let's find out.

This is also a good indication of a hardware issue. Usually indicates that your RAM has gone bad. I would check to see if your RAM is still good. Is it the original that came with the computer or RAM you added?

Hope this helps mate!

Well if you can't boot into safe mode, that's BAD. I'd say your windows installation is either totally corrupted to the point you're going to have to reinstall, or you have a hardware issue.

Remove the Hard drive and put it in another computer and see if you can access it, if you can't, the HDD is your problem, you need a new one. If you can, pull all of your important data off of it for now. Check to make sure your other hardware is ok, if it is, format the HDD and reinstall windows.

That's all i can think of to tell you, and it's probably what i would do.

We were having trouble with one computer, and ordered a new hard drive, then I had the computer guys come install it, and just in time, as the old one would do the same thing, start and restart, never getting to a full reboot., so we took the old one and made a slave.

No, it's an original RAM, I didn't add anything to the computer, thanks for the suggestion though.

I have absolutely no idea what that means, I'm so technological illeterate, I'll do a little research on how to do what you told me and get back if it doesn't work.

Thanks though :D

I would recommend going to the book store (like barnes and noble if you have one) and see if you can get a Linux magazine that has a "live" cd or dvd of some version of Linux.

It could be that the boot loader in windows got messed up and is not letting you startup. a Live Linux CD or DVD runs completely from the CD/DVD and does nothing to your hard drive so that would allow you to start your computer. If you can get Knoppix (which is a version of linux) personally i think it has the best trouble shooting options for fixing windows problems and i can tell you how to see if it's the boot loader and how to repair it with Knoppix.

If you have a second computer or laptop, you can download and burn an ISO image of knoppix to a CD and you wouldn't have to spend time trying to find it at a book store or something. Knoppix is the only linux version i know well enough to tell you how to fix the boot loader with it if that is the problem. if you can download knoppix, you can get it here: http://www.knoppix.com/ then click the download button and then pick the FTP or HTTP site that is geographically closest to you. Knoppix will also allow you access to your hard drive and it's data (as long as it's not the hard drive it's self that is broken).

i forgot to add that there is an excellent book that barnes and nobles carries called "hacking knoppix" by scott granneman that has a knoppix CD and explains how to do EVERYTHING you need. including how to fix boot problems with windows.

^ *heavy sigh* well, I guess I have to learn how to remove the hard drive.............................but, uhmm, what does that look like on the computer??

Sorry I'm really stupid in this technology department.

Yea usually when it's your RAM your computer won't even POST... Yours is at least POSTING. It's just when it gets to windows that it F's up. This screams 1. Corrupted Windows, 2. Bad HDD sectors, or 3. Corrupted boot files/sector to me.

So it can only be one of those three then huh, alright, I'm off to the bookstore to find the book needed and fix this f*cked up problem

Its restarting due to having autorestart on errors turned on. I believe there's an option on that boot nenu to turn the autorestart off. You may get it to start this way but will most likely get the blue screen of death.

FUCK. i'm sorry. there is a section in the book i mentioned about repairing a master boot record (or MBR for short) in widnows with Knoppix. But i failed to notice it says "restoring MBR" and not repairing it. it requires you to have already backed up the MBR, which you wouldn't have known to do before hand. so i'm sorry. i think the guys above are right that you will have to use your windows installation CD to repair your boot loader.

there are great instructions on how to enter the recovery consul thing from the windows CD and then in part III of the article it tells you how to fix the boot loader thing.

No, I plugged it into my other computer to check if it was that, but it's definitely something else..... Ok, so Knoppix doesn't work huh, so right now, the only two things I can do is fix the damn hard drive or use my Windows Installation CD right?

Thanks Mike and everyone else, greatly appreciated for your help. So exactly what is the installation windows CD? Was it supposed to come with the computer?

Thanks T-Rexx, but uhmm, which one of the mirror sites do I use, or does it matter that I can pick anyone of them? And for Knoppix, so my comp will run scan the CD first and use that to turn on so I can fix the problem? Is that how that works?
