I realize this is probably in the wrong section but I didn't know where else to post it.

To the point: What's the best way to find a roommate? A gay, platonic roommate.

Back story: (which I wrote first but didn't want to bore anybody clicking on this post)

I'm 55 and have found myself in need of a place to live. I have had my own houses, apartments, RV's in the past. I have a college education but still dumb enough to have gotten into the trucking industry. I was overseas for a year and over the road for three years after that. I chased the oilfield in west Texas while living in a 42' fifth wheel RV then transferred to Houston while living in the RV. Now I am back home with the parents who had medical conditions requiring one surgery after another. They're better now and I am ready for some privacy again. In 2011 I sold my last place to the city and now there's a nice road where my living room used to be.

I now drive locally and am home every night and on weekends. I have looked at places around the Dallas metroplex. What I can afford I don't want and what I want I can't afford. Well it's not that I can't afford it, it's just I don't want to spend it on housing. Plus it would be nice to have a roommate. I think?? I haven't had a roommate since college. I'm not creepy (that's what my mamma tells me anyways), have a sense of humor and am reliable, trustworthy and don't steal people's stuff.

Hi Joe.

Are you wanting to rent a room in a gay home share, buy a home and rent out a room, or find a roommate then search for a home to rent or buy together? Either way, lots of websites that match roommates have ways to search for gay roommates.

It seems like you might have the funds to buy a property of a quality you would be happy to live in, but you're reluctant to spend so much on something just for yourself. Have you thought about buying a property then finding a gay roommate to rent a room to? That way if you take a disliking to your roommate or other circumstances change you can simply ask them to leave and you would not have to find a new home for yourself at the same time.

However you decide to go about it, my only suggestion other than roommate matching websites would be to join a local gay group and search amongst the local gay community in the area you want to live. Doing it this way means you might get to know them a little before living together and you can pick a roommate you already know and like. I've heard good things about meetup.com- that might be a place to start your search.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Well you can try Roomster.com or Roommates.com
Thanks! I have tried roomster.com but the matches were off on important criteria yet they said it was an 86%. I will have to try that other one. Also Craigslist has been a source but those guys think $500/month for their share will cut it :(

Aren't there other truckers looking for a place?
My idea roomie would be an over-the-road driver and he would be gone most of the time..haha

I know I could get more in a single family type home but it would also come with more responsibilities (maintenance, yard work, etc.). A townhouse would be more to my liking but there would be HOA dues which are just crazy in some places depending upon the amenities the complex offers. I do like your suggestion that I be the owner in case something goes sour in the guest arrangements. I was all set to get a place with my BF but when he got an efficiency apt without telling me I knew he had other planes...haha.
