HELP! I'm losing leg hair around my ankles!

I have seen many men with this situation at the gym etc and they just wear whatever socks they want and don't seem to have an issue with it. I guess in the big picture of things hairless ankles aint a bad thing to have.

If you have this - would you consider shaving/waxing your legs so it won't stand out? Would you wear shorts in public?

I went to another message board where they deal with hairloss. Its mostly for people going bald on their head but there are Doctors who perform a procedure called a FUE transplant where they can transplant hair from my chest or arms to the balding area of the legs. This can be costly but it is more than likely one of two options I have at this point. The other is to just wax/shave my legs which I don't want to do. The doctor I spoke with on the message board gave me several Doctors who do this procedure. They told me guys have gone to them to have this done so its not that unusual of a request. So, I'm glad it is something can be done. When I contact the DR. I'm going to ask of before and after photos and then send them pics of my ankles and show they the density and how much I want done. Then I'll wait and see what the estimated cost will be. I know this sounds dumb to some, but not for me. I am no bear but I find hairy legs sexy and I have been told (when I had hair) that I had very sexy legs. So, thats where I am right now. Hope it helps some of you out there!

Well, I have actually asked my doctor about it! Circulation can be a cause and that can be from a number of factors! But, you can actually break and pull hair from your legs by socks that are too tight. The reason you don't see that on other parts of your body is that other clothing is usually not that tight. And yes, if it occurs often enough you can damage the roots enough that it will not grow back. I notice every year in the spring that my ankles and knees are more bare. As summer goes on and I am not wearing sox often, if at all, or jeans which rub more, that it grows back.

socks do not rub hair off, but if you want to believe that, fine. Just as you believe that no one smokes.

circulation is your issue.

Since socks to not rub hair off, your question will never be answered.

Scoff at me with your superior wisdom but if socks rubbed hair off and prevented its grow back, then your chest, groin, and legs would be bald from the shirts, underware, and pants.

Fine it's circulation!!! But you at 54 are not gonna have the same circulation as the young guys on here. That's really what I ment. Good day.

Losing hair on your ankles your lucky im gaining hair. and it hurts sometimes in my socks cause its being flattened

One of the Doctor's suggested taking Evening primrose and try using Minoxodyl on the ankles. I'm willing to give it a shot!

Thanks for posting this problem.

I have the EXACT same issue with the hair on my legs. I even posted something about it a while back. At first, I thought it was from the socks that I wore or from working out. It bothered me because I like men with hairy legs and I found that to be an attractive feature. I went to doctors but they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. They recommended using over-the-counter hair loss treatments.

I was content to leave it alone and just live with it but it has started to spread to other parts of my legs. I was deeply disturbed by this. It really scared me because who's to say that it wouldn't keep going up my body?

I saw another dermatologist recently who referred me to another specialist. They did biopsies on my legs. She was cerned that it may be T-cell lymphoma. They found no evidence of that but it is still not out of the question.

Right now I am on a regime of topical creams which is kind of difficult to keep up with. Fortunately, there have been some promising results. It is not a cure and I can't say that it is really working that well but something seems to be happening. She also recommended that light therapy may help. In the meantime, she said I can get sunlight on the area to see if that also helps. She is dianosing me with Alopecia Areata. She didn't want to mark it as possible T-cell Lymphoma because I may have an issue with my insurance.

For something that started as a vanity issue, it certainly ballooned into a big deal that is kind of scary.

The doctors do say that this is very rare. I hope that you can get the help you need to curb this problem.

Wow I would have never thought it could lead to what you are going through - hope things work out for you

I have been taking evening primrose, fish oil tablets and Minoxydl for a little over a month now. My already existing hair is getting thicker and I see little starnds of hair in some places on my ankles. Not sure if this is a good sign or not. Still looking into surgical options. I heard they can transplant arm hair to the ankle area. When I find out more about this I'll post!

No hair around the ankles study by Shep

I did a little observation of the posters for this thread.
Would you care to hear what I found?
I am going to tell you whether you want to hear it or not.
Most of you are in your thirties and early forties.
Unless of course, you have been lying about your age.
My insight is you all approaching the dreaded mid-life crisis.
Hair falling off the legs and ankles is a sure sign of a
testosterone imbanance. This causes hair loss on top
the head as well and sometimes on the top of the feet.

No real solution is known. You are getting older or just
plain old.
Adjust, for just when you get to thinking this is the way it
is going to be for the duration, you start to grow hair in
places you have never had hair before. At first this may make
you happy, but the part that grows out of ears, noses, and eyebrows is a real nuisance. Just adjust. More episodes
follow, but I will not tell until the information is needed
and is likely to be remembered,
because short term memory goes before the change.
lol if you like. But the old man is wise.

I think this just happens with age if you will notice older men. But also it is the socks one wears. I've been concerned about this all my life and while the hair near the ankles isn't as great as the rest of the leg it is still there and I accredit this to wearing either cotton socks or at least 85% acrylic socks that DON'T cling to the leg too tightly. Get loose socks. Also, when you put your socks on, run your hand down the sock to straighten out the hairs. And wear socks as infrequently as possible.

Shepherd 2, good post. I'm getting older, but I have noticed this since my early twenties. I'm noticing hair growth where I was losing it on my legs. It no longer looks as patchy as it did towards my ankles. My Dad is 61 and his legs are VERY hairy. Go figure.
