Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

Is it the live disc or the alternative?
What you can do is

1)See if the dvd-drive is flawed
2)Try 8.10 Alternative (no live cd, you just get to install it, it's easy!)
3)Try older versions, I think it was called Hardy and then do a dist-upgrade.

But listen to me when I tell you this.
You want to stay the FUCK away from Linux.
Use Windows XP/Vista or get OS X with a Mac.

Linux is bad.... IT IS bad.
Free software is crap

90% of the applications are crappy unstable beta software that never reaches 1.0

There I said it. We all were thinking it.

I got Debian as a server, running irssi, bitlbee, apache, screen rTorrent and Emacs
Occasionally I use NX to get access to the server and program with Eclipse.

But I hate myself for it, and I feel unclean and dirty.
It ends up with one of those date-rape showers crying your lungs out, scratching the wall while cowering in fear in a corner with ice cold water.

*NIX IS SATAN
except OS X :)

Noelie, did you even check that thread?
That's pre-Inteprid (8.10)

I am sure they have worked on most things.

But as I said, go with Windows or get a Mac
Stay away from Ubuntu.

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

I am sorry I only find issues dated March and stuff related to Hardy.
The only issue I found was some guy that had issues with sound in both Hardy and Inteprid.
But there were like two of them I am sure there would be more if it was a general bug.

Anyway, sorry for coming out harsh noelie.

I really HATE Linux. I really do... it hurts my insides.

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

Yeah..you stick with that Mac.... hold on to it.. TIGHT!

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

RANT RANT
Dude.... no shit?
I got the same system running at home with BSD as a router.
Doesn't make it user friendly or good at all.
It makes it difficult, complicated and a total MIND-FUCK.

It makes it NOT userfriendly.
Everything you just wrote (that I have made scripts for) is USELESS for the end user.
The end users usually want a stable application with a GUI.
I don't give a damn about M-X Butterfly curing AIDS and HIV if it doesn't have GUI.
It is NOT and will NEVER be good for the end user.

I'll wait for you to download your third party program that makes iso images.

I think OS X can do that as well, I haven't tried it, but I would say that it does it well.
So who is the one "talking head without a brain."?
Windows.. not, but who gives a damn.
90% need GUI and for that you need the utterly and useless X.
Yes.. I said that too.
X sucks...

Took me a week to realize I needed to downgrade X with Inteprid to the X used in Feisty to get the shit to work on a Mac mini again. I use that for movies with XBMC.

OP clearly have no knowledge of Linux.
How much of USE would all those command-line be if he never even used a terminal?

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

Well... i don't particularly care for ubuntu (nor SUSE). i've had trouble even getting ubuntu to run live on eihter my laptop and desktop. i have with each version i've tried. however, i have had no trouble getting pclinux2007, knoppix 4 (and newer) running on my laptop or my desktop. you might try a different version of linux such as what i've mentioned. freespire is a very windows looking version you might try. you can take a look at http://distrowatch.com/ for other versions.

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

Don't be hatin' on Linux! They fuckin' rule the world.

Why are you all about Ubuntu? If you just want any good, easy alternative OS then you might want to check out Red Hat's Fedora. Version 9 is pretty much the bee's knees. It's the bee's tits. It's the bee's tit's nipples.

This forum probably isn't the best place to go for help installing Ubuntu... Seriously, have you even been to Ubuntu's website?

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

I've had troubles with 8.1 under emulation and some older dells.

7.04 (I think that's the last ver) works quite well on both the above.

I'd start with checking your CD and make sure it's a good burn.

And as for the *nix naysayer, it may take a little work under the hood to achieve the end result, but once it's done, no need to recheck. I have a headless box sitting in the next room. No keyboard, no mouse, no monitor, no floppy, no cdrom; oh, and no xwindows. Everything is done via a terminal and it's just fine. It fucks with ones mind because he has to think about what one's doing and how it affects the system.

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

^^ I would but it makes a weird beeeeeeeeep-beep-beep-beep noise. ;)

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

knoppix works very well with older hardware and is generally pretty good about auto detecting said hardware. i would still give it a try if you are interested. ;)

Re: * HELP * Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 15

I think Ubuntu is the best one when it comes for hardware support.
Then again _ALL_ distrubutions sucks monkey ass when it comes to newer hardware...
