Hey you guys ;)

I'm barely a Freshmen, so I don't want to appear snobby or ungrateful, this is just my head space at the moment. Honestly, I'm open to ALL opinions from ALL types of people.

So, I've come to terms with it; I'm black... apparently. Based on my GPA, I have been invited to join the Black Scholars Honor Society at my university. Although I am somewhat honored, I'm not sure I want to join. I don't feel that it will help me do any good or anything. The only thing that it could possibly do is beef up my resume. I am simply not interested in being just another black face in a black organization that's on the campus of an already racially divided school. I'm so torn because I know that it's a great opportunity and all. I already feel guilty for accepting an internship for black students at a law firm when I was in 10th grade. I don't see myself as intelligent or highly-capable...for a black man. I also don't want to present myself in that manner on my resume'. I want to be seen as intelligent on my own merits that I EARNED. My dreams transcend the limits that this program suggests that my race places on me.

Do you guys think I should do it? I love you all, you sexy beasts! :)

There are two trains of thought....

1) you don't want to be a member and find it an out-dated, self-segregating group that offers you nothing but the chance to suggest people that your race matters and might have been the "reason" you got into school. Not worth it.

2) It will beef up your resume. It might help you get ahead. Just like a fraternity helps their members get ahead decades later and in this world. Anything you can use to help you get ahead will be worth it.

I'd find out what they can do, what they can offer you in the field that you're going out for, and what they're all about(whether it's a sham or something of prestige) before making the final choice.

Admirable that you want to succeed and not have race be a factor... but wouldn't be wise to throw away opportunities because they "cater" to your race either.

1=Exactly. My school is SOOO segregated, it's ridiculous. It's in the south, but I just assumed that the world had changed since the fucking 60's. Plus it's 60 dollars to join. I don't see how it'll get me ahead. If I were looking to work in an office, then sure I'd consider it, but I am an artist/song writer. UGHHH LIFE!

what do they actually do?

I was in an honors society in college (I was the president of it during my senior year, actually )... all it amounted to was a party once/year and a line on my resume.

I don't know what they do. They say they recognize students who have shown academic excellence, community service... Their website is vague as shit and all they say is that they want to show that black people can succeed given the opportunity. When I see shit like this, I think it has modern black panthers written all over it.

With all the hubbub surrounding black history month, I just can't stand to think about race anymore! When the fuck are people going to realize that I am a fucking person WITHIN this skin. My skin doesn't bind to any other person or group.

I love your attitude. I understand there was a time when groups like these were necessary, but times have changed. I tend to think that race based groups like that are now holding people back instead of helping.

hi Mr-Brooding,

You gave already alot of valid reasons that you don't want to join the Black Scholars Honor Society at your university.

Well, do what you like to do, but I tend to think that you have already decided that you won't like to join this Society, especially because you don't have a good clue what might be the benefits of it.

Do you happen to know some people who are member of this Society? And if this is the case, do they seem to be friendly and nice people you would like to spend some time with, or become friends with?

Finally, there are no fixed rules that you always need to put all this kind of things on your resumé.

Best wishes & take care

In a world where it's proven that privilege comes with being White, you see it as an insult to talk the opportunity in networking with other minorities to earn advancement. Regardless of what choice you make, I imagine your attitude will have you butting heads with most Black scholars.

Their invitation may be their mistake to regret.

Well, when you put it like that...
Really, I'm sure I'm going to offend every type of person when I say this, but I live in the south. This is where religion is deeply rooted within African American families. Because of their devoutness, many of the black upperclassmen that I have met are very masculine, the homophobic type of masculine that are disgusted by appearing feminine. I noticed it the first time I had interaction with the black alpha-males of the school over the summer. Since creeping out of the closet in January, I do not wish to build friendships on false pretenses.
I know, I'm giving them a chance by prejudging them, but what can I do? Join and get hurt when I try to open up?
This isn't just about race, the more I think about it, it's about me.

Who cares about the reason?

Were someone to hand me $1000 I won't care why.

Accept the accolade and move along.

DO IT! I AM OLD FOGIE HJARVARD LAW GRAD, FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH. I KNOW FROM HARVARD LAW EXPERIENCE IN GETTING IN THAT GREAT RESUME ADDITIONS SUCH AS THIS WOULD BE HELP A LOT FOR GRAD SCHOOL, IF YOU'RE INTERESTED. YES, YES, JOIN!

BTW, HLS WAS GAY HOSTILE WHEN I WAS THERE--NOW TOTALLY DIFFERENT. ALSO, SUCH PLACES LOVE ALL SORTS OF DIVERSITY, NOT RACIAL QUOTAS. FOR EXAMPLE, I AM SURE I GOT IN THERE BECAUSE I WAS FROM "EXOTIC"--TO EASTERNERS--WHO KNOW MORE ABOUT EUROPE THAN AMERICA!--MONTANA! I LOVED THE DIFFERENCE IN STUDENTS--FACULTY WAS NOT AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED. CONGRATS ON YOUR PROPOSED HONOR!

Do it. What have you got to lose? If you don't want it on your resume, don't put it on your resume.

You say that the society invited you based on your GPA so whatever merits it is that you want to be judged by, you've clearly earned it.

I think I'll join now. I'm so glad I posted my question on here instead of on Facebook!
