did a install of xp sp2 and the usb ports are not listed in the device manager and usb devices are not detected when plugged in...please help:confused:

What kind of computer? Did the ports work previously under a different OS? What OS did they work/not work under previously? If this is a desktop computer, are the ports which are not working on a plug-in card, or on the motherboard? Are any of the usb ports at all working this machine?

Is this a custom build computer or a name brand one? If custom build do you have an installation CD for the motherboard? that should have the device drivers for all onboard hardware.

If you don't let's see if device manager shows any USB controllers.

1. Right click on your my computer icon and select properties.
2. Single left click the Hardware tab in the systems properties popup.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. In Device manager, scroll down to the bottom to see if "Universal Serial Bus controllers" is listed. If it does, expand it (click the plus) and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to any of the sub categories? If there is a yellow exclamation mark double click it and see what it says under Device Status. If it says the drivers are not installed go to step 6 below. If they are listed but doesn't tell you anything is wrong go to step 10.
5. If there isn't an entry that says "universal serial bus controller" lets try running the add hardware wizard. Go on to next step.
6. Open your control panel. If you have it set to "categories" click "switch to classic view" then double click on "add hardware."
7. The hardware wizard pops up, so click "next" then after a few seconds (depending on the speed of your computer) you'll be asked if you've already connected the hardware to your computer. Click on "yes..." then click next.
8. scroll through the list to the bottom and select "add a new hardware device" then click "next."
9. Select "search for and install the hardware automatically." After a while, the wizard will either have detected your USB controller or not. If it did, follow the on screen prompts to install the drivers for the controller. If it didn't I'm out of suggestions.

10. Let's try to remove and reinstall all the USB controllers.
11. Right click on "my computer" and select "properties."
12. Click the "Hardware" tab.
13. Click the Device Manager button.
14. Expand (click the plus next to it) Universal Serial Bus controllers.
15. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
16. Restart the computer, and hopefully windows will auto detect the USB controllers and reinstall them. If not you can try running through steps 6-9 above.

there is no usb category in device manager as well as the new hardware installation thing...had xp sp2 earlier as well and it worked properly...it is a custom built one and i tried installing usb2 drivers ...nothing happened tough...and thanks guys for your help...

if the USB ports are on the motherboard, what motherboard do you have? maybe we can find device drivers for you to install from the web.

Noelie what do you think about this....gosh how to explain what i mean... maybe some "new" hardware is conflicting with IRQs or something now with the fresh install that wasn't before. I mean like what if the USB ports were working before (with whatever assigned resources they had), and "new" hardware was installed and assigned it's own resources, but now with a fresh install windows assigned the recourses (originally designated for the USB) to this "new" hardware and doesn't know what to do with the USB now? does that make any sense? i'm grasping at straws here.

problem solved...a bios update and change in cinfig solved it...thanks
