do you use any herbs or plants to treat yourself.

My most popular one is when I have a small abrasion/scratch I like to cut off a piece of aloe vera and squeeze out the liquid, then rub it over the abrasion.

If you do use herbs or plants, what do you use and what do you use it for?

yeah my herb is weed. lots of it. 4-5 blunts a day keeps the doctor away

Tumeric is great for arthritis, have a bit of it and it helps cut down the inflammation. Cherries (pretty much any type- frozen, canned, fresh) is great to combat gout. Horny Goat Weed raises testosterone levels. Echinacea raises the level of white blood cells, but it is unknown yet if that translates into better immune response to cold viruses or infections overall. St. John's Wort works about like Elavil, a low level mood elevater. Aspirin comes from willow bark (no wonder beavers don't have headaches). Labador has a slight opiate affect but too much is toxic, was once use in the brewing of beer to give it a little more kick. Peppermint/Spearmint settles the stomach, eases nausea, so too with Chamomile but Cham can be toxic if too much taken.

There are many more with proven track records and with scientific based evidence that they work.

Don't forget the minerals and other stuff. Folic Acid (not just to prevent birth defects in pregnant women) up to 1mg lowers homocystine levels (thought to be involved in heart disease). B6 is good for nerves.

L-Arginine is good for increasing levels of nitric oxide, necessary in men to achieve an erection. Chromium helps produce better insulin, lowers blood sugars and can in some instances help in weight loss.

It goes on and on.

are you ever concerned about the long term effects to your brain from using weed?

I don't know if anyone has ever heard of Dr Drew on Love Line, but he used to say that there are much more effective and less damaging drugs than using Mary Jane. He said that the marajuana that is used today is way stronger than the stuff used in the 60's.

OFF TOPIC: The closest that I have ever come to it is my living room furniture, gym bag, some clothing, and a few other itmes are made out of hemp (not marajana). It also looks like California may be growing hemp legally really soon. :-) I'm a big supporter of hemp.

Garlic pills for blood/heart - zinc tablets to eradicate free radicals and some vitamin b12 tablets

I use herbs a lot. My Grandparents taught me to use them. I make a Spring tonic out of Sassafras root and wild cherry bark. You steep the root and bark to make a tea. I use Arnica gel for bruises or sore muscles. Ginseng and Angelica tonic is good if you feel a cold coming on. I grow peppermint and spearmint for tea and seasoning. Peppermint tea is good if your head is congested.

I take green tea extract, as well as chromium. The Green tea extract I take to boost my metabolism, as well as all the other health benefits it has, and chromium to help me use my insulin better.

I use lotions with hemp seed extract in them, as it has wonderful moisturizing properties. I also drink lots of tea(mostly black, but some white) for the various health benefits it has.

I also take a daily multivitamin.

nice thread, Metta (*8*)

i've been studying herbalism for over a year now ^.^
it's been totally interesting! ^_^
i regularly make ointments and potions for family and friends
they're sort of my test subjects as well haha
my favorite way of using herbs for myself is as infusions,
seeing as how i drink allot of tea anyway ^_-
my favorite kinds of herbs are perhaps those with purifying abilities
such as Nettle, which is one of the most amazing plants i know.
another one of my personal favorites at the moment is Greater Burdock
i regularly use it's roots as an ingredient in preparations that are good for the skin.
i also love to use herbs in teh kitchen ^_-
especially the spicy tasting ones, such as chilli peppers,
those are especially great during the winter months ^_^

but let's not forget! the basis of good health is your diet
or to quote Hippocrates; let food be your medicine and medicine your food

More herbs is not always better.
Know what herb you want to try.
Keep a careful journal for several weeks or years of the effects,
physical, emotional and in general.
Each one of us has a unique body chemistry.
Monitor yours.
Some herbs do not mix well with pharmaseuticals.
Others can leave you with an unpleasant body odor.
For instance, I have eaten garlic for years,
but you may find yourself reeking of it if you eat it..
Know the down side of common side effects.

When working in the yard if I get a cut I use pig ear to prevent infection.
If I feel a headache coming on I rub a lime on my forehead.
Radishes are great for liver function issues.
One to watch out for is peanuts at bedtime they can give you awful nightmares.
