Well it’s that time of year again, yes Summer. You see, my friends, Summer and I have a love-hate relationship, and we have since 2008. I started working in Education Finance in January 2008. I didn’t realize until Summer of that year how terribly busy my summers would be. Mind you, it’s not all bad, but it’s not all good either! Everything in moderation, as they say. Don’t ask me who they are, either. I cannot tell you who they are for I do not know! I realized in that first year of employment that things were very busy at that time – for summer is also audit season. Each of our clients is required to be audited on an annual basis. Yeah, totally not fun and a hell of a lot of work. At the time that I first entered audit season, I was being paid hourly, a wonderful thing! Though I do love my salary, I don’t get paid for any of the extra hours that I put in, either.
All of the work lately, however, as well as the stress that I have been under has recently made me sick, at least that’s what I am blaming it on. When you think about it, it is most likely WORK that made me STRESSED. I have two spreadsheets running right now of tasks that I need to get completed. I need to get my regular job duties done (Federal and State Special Education fund tracking, Title Program tracking, Financial Statement Processing, Budget Entries, as well as various other accounting tasks), on top of my audit fieldwork (Fixed Asset Reporting, Bank Confirmations, Legal Confirmations, Conflict of Interest Letters, Board of Director Rosters, UFARS Crosswalks, Journal Entry/Cash Receipt Listings, EDRS/UFARS Reconciliations, UFARS/SERVS Reconciliations, Unaudited UFARS Uploads, and Audited UFARS Uploads). By the way, I don’t expect you all to understand what all of those are. They are pretty specific to what I do, some of them at least. Others are pretty generic across many fields of accounting. Education Finance, however, is very specialized.
Compounding my stress, perhaps, is the thought that I will be out of the office from August 17th – August 21st on “vacation.” I use quotation marks in the last statement as I don’t know how much of a vacation it will be knowing that there may be things that I hadn’t gotten a chance to wrap up before I left. I’m going to try my hardest to get everything finished before leaving that Friday (August 14th), however I’m not sure I will have EVERYTHING completed. Part of it depends on how quickly I can hear back from my clients. I need their signatures on a few documents. Without those, there’s no chance I can get everything done in time. It’s been an interesting few weeks. On top of the audit work, as I mentioned earlier, I need to get my regular work done. Starting next week, I will have several sets of financials to complete. I have four sets of financials to complete by Wednesday (1 – June, 3 – July). I’m really going to be hauling ass to get everything completed. I don’t know how I will do it, honestly. Each financial statement does take quite a bit of time to update. We’ll just have to see how that all goes I guess.
