It's a bulge above and to the left of my pubic bone. I have had this for a few years, and my doctor said it was no big deal sincve it would "go back in so easily." Anyway, it's getting a bit uncomfortable especially if I work really hard all day.

I think I need some kind of truss. Surgery might be difficult since I don't have insurance.

Any advice on trusses?

I recommend a second opinion by another doctor, of course. I have found that there are some really stupid doctors out there! I have had my share of bad experiences with supposed medical professionals. Best of luck.

that is a hernia, it's called a
(hi-atel hernia<--?spelling. Comes out and you can push back in.

I had it also. It can get worse over time and can drop into your ballsac and wrap around testicles and cause severe pain. So get a 2nd look at it. as it could remain the same but you may be doing something that one time and it will tear open more. It's better to get it fixed sooner thatn later.

Trusses are a bandaid temp fix and onl work a little bit. It can get worse, mine wraped around the testicle tubes and caused huge pain.

A hiatal hernia does not necessarily pop in and out. I know because I had one. Eventually I just got tired of feeling it there and having to be careful about lifting heavy things so I had it fixed. My doctor also said it was no big deal unless it is causing you problems and pain is the least of the problems. You can get nausious and weak and other symptoms. You will feel like you have the flu without the cough and sneezing. The kind that affects your balls and so forth is one that has become really bad, which they may or may not do. Mine never bothered me at all and I had it for years. Some men go through their whole life with it. Still, I knew it was there and wanted it fixed. I didn't even know I had a hernia until my doctor mentioned it during a routine annual physical.

If you can't afford to see the doctor, see if there are any free or low cost social services clinics in your area and, at least, let a doctor check it out. Yes, a truss will help a little if you do a lot of manual labor. It provides support but it is not a "cure". The only way to fix a hernia is surgery and even that's not a big deal. I had it done and was back to work in 2 days. It was sore for awhile but that was about it.

A minor correction- a hiatal hernia affects the stomach and diagram.

What OP is describing is an inguinal hernia which in which the contents of the lower abdomen slip through the inguinal canal (which is an opening to each side near the top of the scrotum).

It's a complicated situation since it does need to be repaired at some point- especially if you are in a job that requires lifting or straining. It would be to your benefit to get employment that offers health insurance.

The absence of insurance is a situation unique to the US. This would not be an issue in any other industrialized country.

I trust my doctor, and the situation is related to a late-descending testicle. But the no insurance thing is really bad, since I think I need to get this fixed. It does this weird gurgling thing, and as I mentioned above it is annoying to mildly painful attimes.

Other than that, my body is the same as it was 24 years ago--except that I have better erections!

I would get another opinion about what's going on. A truss sounds like a reasonable way to go. As for insurance that's more complicated. In any case it doesn't sound life-threatening if you don't get it. But you might want to consider the implication of not having insurance if something far more serious happens. Yes - solution to that is get employment where insurance is offered or move to a country with social insurance options. I know for me I could not exist without coverage and would have been ruined financially for life without it several times in the past.

Oh, yeah, I'll just move to another country and change my sexual orientaion while I'm at it.

Actually, the recommendation was to find employment where health insurance was offered (which is most major employers in the US) or move to a country that has a social health insurance system (which would be just about any country other than the US).

Karabulut is right; hernia in the groin is likely an inguinal hernia. Hiatal hernia is when the stomach bulges up towards the diaphragm and presents with completely different symptoms.

At this point it seems like your hernia is reducible (meaning it can be pushed back in very easily). A hernia that is reducible is at low risk for incarceration (part of the bowel that herniates out of the abdominal wall can sometimes get stuck and choked to death), so surgery at this point is totally elective. When you get to the point where the hernia cannot be reduced anymore, surgery is then strongly recommended. When you start develop bowel obstruction, ischemia, or perforation from the incarceration, an emergency surgery is necessary.
