I dont like the word and dont like it used for shock value either.

"Personally, I think we're doing future generations a dis-service by sanitizing literature in the name of racial and political correctness.

In years to come they'll be changing 'slaves' to 'freedom denied human labourers'...

^In a nutshell.

Political correct censorship reminds me that George Orwell's 1984 should be made available to those who insist that children should be shielded from the lessons of history.

I think it's racist to assume that an entire group of people are incapable of hearing or reading a six-letter combination of letters, a word that they themselves don't have a problem using.

Words aren't hateful, people are.

Quick, some put clothes on art work before the CHILDREN ask inappropriate questions!!! When did we become a society of puritanical killjoys? Oh, right, that's who founded this country.

Especially those who believe that words are the causation of racial hatred.

Some body call the gestapo....

that fucking brit twit has been in my closet and reading my secret texts again.

Fucking outrage....and the bloody barstard ain't even a Celt.

Mark Twain is overrated. Why read a hyped dead man's work if you can go out and learn more about life that way.

... this sort of thing pisses me off no end, so I'm going to shut up in case I say something I come to regret.

So instead, I'll just point you to From Homogenous to Honey, a comic written by Neil Gaiman in response to a notoriously homophobic law passed by the Thatcher government, and which says in four pages what George Orwell took several thousand words to say in 1984.

At the time it was written, those were not slurs words.

But, at the time you were born American wasn't one either.

So................what changed?

At the time it was written, those were not slurs words.

I disagree.

At the time it was written, there was not an issue in the slurring of these individuals. The slur was always there, but white people didn't give a shit.

The mentality of society has changed.

change title of topic be SCHOOLS run by dumbheads

ans make da world taday

thankyou

I don't think we should should historic literature to conform to modern ideals. They should be left the way they were to remind of a darker time, where we have been and how far we have come. That said, I don't think the word should be thrown around as loosely as it is today!

Fetababy

young buddy, young chum

your great grandparents were just discovering sexuality

when Clemens had pen in hand. A time of black and white

for the masses.....ebony and ivory were not terms used by

the hoi polloi {original meaning} just by interior decorators

and various social mavens.

And, No, I never had any grade school books with the word "faggot" littered throughout them.
No kidding. When it comes to mandatory classroom reading, the word nigger is just as negative as faggot and has no place in our schools. Sure teach them about racist and homophobic slangs but don't force kids to read books that use the terms in an uninformative context.

^ we already have when you consider that female roles were traditionally played by men. Of course to do that nowadays would be 'so gay'!

And?

Still doesn't change anything. The way we think today is a result of the civil rights wins by blacks and women. The road to equality has been used for a reason. And simply saying that was the commons of the time doesn't change the fact that our past is littered with bigotry.

It is what it is, and this censuring of the book seems to be a denial of that.

=====================================

This topic has made Yahoo news headlines. The article seemed. . . . dismissive.

rotary. you and fetaBAby are two people I really like here.

Would you both grab your intellectual side for a moment and

read post number 44.

Language is constantly changing, modifying and adjusting. It

is a shame that certain members the current culture like so much

of the current government feels the need to "NANNYCIZE" and to

mollycoddle all so the fucking sheep will all stay in the same pen.

Actually I don't think it was always considered a slur, so I googled the origins of the word and found -

"The word originated as a term used in a neutral context to refer to black people, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective niger, meaning the color "black"."

But I do agree that the mentality of society has changed.

But take into account the way society was structured at that time. The lines of division between races ran deeper than simple naming.

Footnote to my good young buddy.

The point Josh, to abuse your postings words,

is.....IT is what it IS and It was what it WAS.

You can't fix yesterday....or prevent tomorrow.

You learn from the past to live today and go forward tomorrow.

End of class, Professor Lefty is going back to his office and

peruse some classics.....to include one very large, ice cold, martini.
