I don't think anyone can answer this, like anyone in the 50's would have thought of cellphones and internet (the www is an invention of CERN by the way, even if internet is US).

What I mean is : from theoretical works stem load of practical applications but it takes time to trickle down and in ways no one could have foreseen.
