Back in high school, I was really good friend with this girl who was one of the top cheerleaders. You regularly saw her do routines at football games. She was popular, attractive, etc. And then one day all of the sudden she quit. This came as a shock to everyone, including me. She really spent a lot of time with it. So, I asked her why she decided to quit it. She told me it was a waste of time.

I didn't really get it until years after when I was reminded of it. Then all of the sudden it came to me what she meant.

Try to take a guess what she meant and why she quit cheerleading.

That's a pretty broad assumption. Maybe she quit to make more time for homework or a job? Maybe she got bad grades and her parents made her quit as punishment? Maybe she didn't like cheerleading and only did it because it was expected of her? There's a myriad of reasons why she quit, and i'm sure she wouldn't appreciate anyone jumping to the conclusion that she was raped.

I grew up in a culture that doesn't particularly value women's rights, let alone the gheys'. Growing up, my father lectured me over and over that women are not to be respected, women are incapable of making sound decisions, women are this, women are that.

Sadly this sort of attitude is not confined solely to High School jocks.
In the UK especially there is a problem with professional football players thinking they are above the law and are owed the fawning respect of everyone just because they are overpaid sportsmen. They tend to have scant respect for all women and especially those they date/marry. Most of the WAGs (wives and girlfriends) go into relationships with them with their eyes wide open. In return for being kept in unbridled splendour they turn a blind eye to many of the extra curricular dalliances. Witness Colleen Rooney's forgiving Wayne for wasting his wages on a 65 yr old hooker!
Let us also remember Oscar. Part of his downfall will, no doubt, be exposed as being due to his unbridled arrogance

I am wondering if this elevation to Gods is a peculiarly US thing as I cannot see anything like it happening in UK schools; after graduation in Uni or in a pro team, yes, but not in High School.
There is some hero worship of sporting teams in Public School, but they tend to be single sex so the whole impressing the girls thing is irrelevant.

Perhaps. That is a good question.

Its idiotic, really. They are just children, but students, faculty and even upper level administrators revere young male athletes, mainly because athletic achievement brings money and a name to the schools and districts. This goes double for small American towns, which dont have much else to claim. There are numerous cases of athletes commiting heinous crimes and are then protected by the adults who stand to benefit from their success.

When I was in high school, a lot of the teachers diverted back to a high school mindset, gushing over athletes. They were given special treatment and I suspect subject to inapporpriate affection.
