I just read an article claiming that Hilary Duff is a gay icon. I just don't understand. They also claimed Amy Winehouse as being one, which I suppose I can accept. However, I just don't understand. I mean Hilary Duff? Why? I will post a link to the article below.

I don't consider either of them gay icons. Especially Hillary Duff. Well, maybe to younger teenage gay guys?...

that was a good article.... I did start liking Hilary after her last album.... and I had never seen that Madonna thing with the drag queens where she says it takes a real man to fill my shoes.

I don't think either Winehouse or Duff have endured long enough or shown enough involvement or interaction with gay men/audiences to really be considered 'icons' let alone 'gay icons.' I do enjoy Winehouse's music and Duff's newer songs, though.

Did anyone involved bother to look up the word 'icon' at all? An important and enduring symbol she is not.

LOL Thank you! Actually, to think about it now Britney Spears (mentioned in the article) isn't either. I mean I know she has a following but, how important is she to the gay community?

I really don't understand the diva obsession with gay guys. Go ahead and listen to their music but when they want to be them and all they talk about is their clothes and how "fabulous" they are, it gets a little creepy.

THANK YOU! :=D: Why so many gay men worship the divas is beyond me. I don't mean any disrespect, but it just doesn't make any sense to me. Personally, I have no interest in the divas to be honest.

Ask a gay guy to name a Hillary Duff song.
I cant.

come clean, so yesterday, why not?, with love, dignity.... I don't know whether that is impressive or really really sad. :D

What qualifies as a gay icon anyway?

I can totally see Duff and Winehouse as having a huge gay fan base, so to an extent, yeah I guess you could say so.

You forgot Stranger. Okay...I'm done and ashamed.

I would personally define a gay icon as someone who has a large fanbase of gay men, has notable public/media connections with their gay male fanbase, and possibly someone who significantly acknowledges their gay male audience. So basically, I would expect gay males to like the individual, third parties to recognize the gay connection, and the individual to acknowledge the gay connection and appeal to it. ::Shrug::

I can't name a Hillary Duff song either...or Kylie for that matter. imo, they're not a gay icons...at least of my generation anyway. Amy....maybe someday she'll get the honor. Cher, Janet, Madonna...sure....they've stood the test of time and I can understand why they'd be classed as such...even though they're not my style of music.

I realize the article was about women...but Elton John and George Michael would be near top of my list as a true gay icons.

She's cute.
She lives a celebrity lifestyle.
She sings poppy songs.

I think anyone fulfilling those three requirements automatically gets "gay icon" status. :)

I have striked through the ones that I don't really know or that I disagree with. I don't see how Mariah Carey could be considered a gay icon... she might have a few gay fans but I am not aware of her being supportive of the gay community... I could be wrong though.

You crossed out Judy Garland! She is one of the all-time gay icons. Before Madonna, it was Judy.

:cry:sb, you really hurt me with your post. I'm crying on the inside. I mean no Babs, Liza w/ a Z, Miss Ross, the original material girl herself, Eartha Kitt! Joan and Bette don't make your list, or the Golden Girls. Whoopi fought for us in the 80s, taking issue with Reagan's lack of addressing the AIDS epidemic. Marylin Monroe, Elaine Stritch, the great Mink Stole (one of John Waters favorites), and Grace Jones all don't make your list?....

lol btw. I think Kathy Griffin is well on her way to being a gay icon, if not already there.

lmao IFeel4U, I was thinking the same thing. :D I think he was going by who actually acknowledged the gay fans.

Here's some of mine:
Pedro Almodovar, Freddie Mercury, Tom Robinson, Elton John, Ian McKellan, Heath Ledger, Tom Hanks, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, John Waters, Divine, River Phoenix, Noel Coward, Stephen Sondheim, Cary Grant, Liberace, Paul O'Grady, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift.

I'll think of more later. :)
