Well, DON'T do that. If he's NOT gay you could really offend him and he might like kick your ass or something, and if he is, he might instinctivly say no, thinking you're some homophobe going to kick HIS ass.

Just ask him if he wants to get lunch of some coffee or something, and if you still feel like you have to ask him ask, why not start by making it clear that you are, like commenting on another guy or something just so that he knows for sure and see where it goes. Goodluck.​

Talk to him about something related to your class and pick up on your gaydar cues.
 
Why don't you have a question or problem with a discussion or something in class and ask for his help. Tell him you'll buy him a cup of coffe or something if he will help you out. If he accepts, GREAT. Then drop some hints and see where it goes.

That sounds like good advice to me!
 
The 'coffee' trick has worked well for me. But you do have to know him at least well enough to know his name before you ask him to go out for coffee.
