HIV resurges in men who have sex with men
Cases climb 12 percent among group of U.S. boys and men ages 13 to 24

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25398121

updated 4:39 p.m. CT, Thurs., June. 26, 2008
A new analysis of HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men points to a troubling increase in new cases among young men, U.S. health officials reported Thursday.

Public health experts use the term "men who have sex with men," or MSM, because many of these men are not strictly homosexual or even bisexual.

Between 2001 and 2006, male-to-male sex was the largest HIV transmission category in the U.S., and the only one associated with an increasing number of HIV/AIDS diagnoses, according to a report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The jump was highest — an increase of 12.4 percent — among boys and men between the ages of 13 and 24 years who had sex with other males, particularly among ethnic minorities.

"To reduce transmission of HIV among MSM of all races/ethnicities, prevention strategies should be strengthened, improved, and implemented more broadly," CDC health officials wrote in their Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Testing is important, they add, because "after persons become aware that they are HIV positive, most reduce their high-risk sexual behavior."

The report describes trends in diagnoses of HIV/AIDS in 33 states that have confidential, name-based HIV case reporting.

Of 214,379 diagnoses during the study period, 46 percent were among MSM. The rate of new diagnoses declined in all other transmission categories — injection drug use, high-risk heterosexual contact, and other routes of transmission

Among all MSM, the estimated annual percentage change was 1.5 percent, the great majority of which involved the 13 to 24 year age group.

Among racial/ethnic groups, the annual increase in the number of diagnoses among MSM was highest among Asian/Pacific Islanders at 12.1 percent, followed by a 3.6 percent rate among American Indians/Alaska Natives; however, these two groups accounted for fewer than 1 percent of all diagnoses made during the study period. The annual increase was 1.9 percent among both African Americans and Hispanics, and 0.7 percent among Caucasians.

In MSM younger than age 25, African Americans bore the greatest burden with 7,658 new diagnoses (annual rate of change of 15 percent), followed by 3,221 new cases among Caucasians (9 percent annual increase) and 2,422 new cases among Hispanics (8 percent).

June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. To address the disproportionately high rate of HIV infection among blacks, the CDC has increased the number of testing sites in 23 geographic areas with the largest number of HIV cases. A list of testing sites is available at www.hivtest.org.

underage children with HIV+ infections - what is going on here?

and those over 18 it would be interesting to see demographics as to whether they are working, unemployed, in prison and or college students.?

also of interest would be figures of those MSM who are homosexual, bi or heterosexual, so as to see where the concentration of cases is occurring?

Yeah, seems that "Abstinence Only" sex education is a real hit.

The sky isn't falling, Chicken Little.

I always see all these rants about how gay men are dying everywhere blah blah THE WORLD IS DOOOOMED. And it's *always* about fucking sex. Yes gay men have issues but I never met one single gay man that didn't use a condom and I've had a few hook-ups.

Listen, nobody should whine or care about the .000001% of people that can't protect themselves. This whole HIV/AIDS whine is silly and blown out of proportion and it's one of the prime reasons why I lean more on the dissident's side. In fact, gay men are already so uptight and girly about sex as it is I'm wondering if this whole movement didn't start a negative backlash. Let's be realistic folks, trying to mix education and fantasy doesn't work because nobody gets aroused when it's something that's supposed to teach you something- unless you're weirder than I am.

Honestly, the issues gay men face have little or at all do with sex. But sex sells and is a big media sensation.

The reason why gay men died in droves back in the day wasn't because they had bareback sex it was a lot of things. ugly sexual encounters that didn't end well because nobody respected each other, didn't like themselves so they took their hate on other gay men during sex- did a lot of drugs and fucked up their immune system that ANYTHING would fucking damage their rectums. Sex doesn't exist in a vacuum, if you take care of yourself you won't have any problems and my heart can only bleed for so many people that if some trashy gay urban person wants to fuck up their lives how am I supposed to save him? Would you? I mean save him directly, instead of blogging and crying.

Oh, to be 24 again.

when I was your age, I'd attended about 40 funerals for friends my age.. that started at the tender age of 19. I lost track of how many friends were totally healthy one week, had a purple blotch the next and were dead a month later.

If you've never seen an 18-year old man bursting with health waste away to blue and purple skin and bones in a matter of months as they lost their minds and control of their bodies, I hope you never do.

Yes... these days you really need to protect yourself but the message isn't getting through. We're failing the younger generation of young gay men by not making sure that the info is getting to them.

In Coming Out & Relationships, I've seen plenty of posts from guys about to have sex for the first time, asking for advice. Luckily, most of us know the CLA chant.

Condoms.
Lube.
Always.

On occasion, somebody comes back to say how great/horrible it was. And from time to time, they'll admit they didn't use a condom because...oh, you name it. It's too embarrassing to buy condoms, they didn't want to bring it up to their partner, they didn't want the partner to think they were HIV+. It doesn't happen too often, thank God, but it's still enough to make me burst a blood vessel.

Cute. You try to comment back my anger with a witty quip instead of proving me wrong. Which you can't, because I'm clearly right.

There is no clues to buy. It isn't a mystery. It's simple, common fucking sense. I mean how can you blame gay men for doing fucked up things when the whole fucking 'gay' thing was a word that straights gave prostitutes? And yet you wonder why nobody likes your community. Because it's unoriginal. Queer, gay, even homosexual. No actual man-loving-man person invented those words. You do *realize* that right. They are still only accurate in a HETEROSEXUAL context. So you still haven't found what you're looking for.

A real gay man DID actually try to give homosexuals a name, but he had hang-ups of his own including the heterosexist belief that gays had women souls but male bodies. It was interesting, as much stomping and whining about acceptance we want, nobody can still talk without sounding like they want their face 50 foot up straight society's ass.

Where is the anger indeed, as Larry Kramer would say.

Thats terrible. in the 80s i guess.
I never saw anyone died of aids... that how boring i am.

There is a clue to buy, and you obviously are broke. Your anger? Perhaps if you spent more time being angry in a productive way, rather than ranting in sweeping generalizations, you would not need a clue.

Yes, in this day and age, we all should know better, and it's a shame that that's not enough. But when you go spouting bullshit about the past, basically thumbing your judgmental nose up at men who had no idea that death awaited them while they were seeking pleasure, companionship, and even love, then you reveal yourself to be far more ignorant than those you seem to love to condemn.

I'm not shifting te blame, I'm exploring one of the factors you address in your final statement. Each factor deserves a thread of its own and I'm constantly blasted for long posts so I was offering a piece of the puzzle, not the whole thing with my statement.

The following represent questions and misconceptions I hear on a daily basis. I wonder how frequently these would exist if public schools spent 30 minutes addressing homosexuality:

-Only bottoms can contract HIV
-You can't catch STDs if you use a condom
-Bodily fluids have to be exchanged to contract an STD
-Gay sex is abnormal and needs to be discreet and kept secret
-You can't catch any diseases during oral sex
-Barebacking is save if you're the top

My questions for the Public School System
-Knowing that MILLIONS of people engage in gay sex, why isn't it taught? Straight sex is.
- Why is homosexuality presented as being so abnormal (even though the animal kingdom displays frequent sexuality) that it's not discussed AT ALL
-Why are homosexual organizations discouraged, yet school dances encourage hetereosexual partnership
-Why aren't STD's discussed in a homosexual context? Wouldn't discussing gay sex dispell rumors and misconceptions and SAVE LIVES?
-Would adults and teens feel encouraged to engage in "downlow" behavior if they were told THE TRUTH, that it's NORMAL?

I could go further about homosexuality's exclusion from school but I'd be getting off topic

Um, because, Darlin', the song I KISSED A GIRL is still controversial this day with way too many people--do you really think those people are going to sit quietly by while a well-meaning health teacher talks to their jock sons about how not to get HIV while having anal sex?

Hell, there are many schools out there that still teach NOTHING but abstinence for heterosexual kids.

The exclusion of sex education would make me laugh if it didn't offend me in its blatant disregard for safety and practicality. What harm could come from gay sex education (or sex education altogther for that matter)? Think they're gonna take this information and have sex? Guess what, they were gonna do it anyway, whether you teach them how to do it properly or not. Our fear of the nasty "s" word is killing people. Wouldn't educating young boys and girls about safe sex possibly save lives? For the sake of avoiding that damn "s" word, the group that makes up a large portion of AIDS cases is not being educated about the very thing that's claiming their lives.

Here's some perspective for you: In 2005, Aids claimed 2.5 million lives. Each year, 1.2 million people die in traffic accidents. In theory, an ill-informed horny teenager is just as (if not a little more) dangerous than a teenage driver. Difference is only one of them is being equipped to face their challenge.

Preaching to the choir, Bud. Reminds me of the student whose parents bought him three new cars in his first year of driving after he irresponsibly totaled the first two. They were also the kind of parents who would have never wanted him to sit through a gay sex education session.

Um...

...

Public health experts use the term "men who have sex with men," or MSM, because many of these men are not strictly homosexual or even bisexual.
...

How?

The term 'men who have sex with men' is quite common because there are a lot of straight male who do not identify as either gay or bisexual who also like to have sex with men.

It is this group of people that we in Australia have targeted with some of the HIV education because they dont go to the usual gay venues.

I know it sounds a contradiction but I once had a fuck buddy who was engaged and he just wanted what his girlfriend could not give him but he still identified as straight.

Yeah, seems that "Abstinence Only" sex education is a real hit.

It would seem to me that as these people are defined as men who have sex with men, they are not following the teachings of abstinence. Perhaps if they were, they would not now be a statistic.

Just a thought...
