To explain:

Yes, even though I know better I made the mistake of going to the supermarket at 5 o' clock on a Friday evening, when it's never anything less than a madhouse in there... Filled with people who just got their paychecks and have two things on their minds... Getting food and getting drunk. (Well, maybe *three* things, but that's another thread)

Anyway, as I entered the store, I noticed a woman giving out samples of some sort of new organic wine. Not a big deal. As I rounded the corner into the deli section, there was another woman handing out samples of some other sort of vino. Again, not too surprising.

Headed toward produce....yep, yet another free wine display, complete with lots of folks suddenly getting a bit more talkative than you'd expect for a grocery store.

Headed back toward the meat counter... There's some guy dressed in German lederhosen handing out free BEER samples and pretzel bites...

Umm. WTF is going on here ??

Suddenly, it dawned on me. With everyone in the states scared to death about the economy (and rightly so) and food prices going up almost everyday... What a great scheme to get everyone a bit 'loopy' to help loosen up their purse strings and make them more likely to buy more stuff !

All told, you could have had a glass or two of wine and a bit of beer, which is more than enough for some folks to catch a buzz, and all for "free".

This is genius ! Evil genius, but still....

Thoughts ?

OMG! What store is this and why am I not there? I'll make sure not to take my debit card or any cash just so I can go and get a free buzz.

This is evil genius. I know a few of my friends would be blazed already and then to add alcohol on top of that... munchies like a motha! They'd be flat broke by the time they left :lol:.

I applaud the strong effort to get people to relax and just buy things, but what's the liability to the store when people who shouldn't be driving in the 1st place start to get a little tipsy and then get behind the wheel. I know they're samples so it would take quite a few to impair someone, but how many other sample tables have you seen where you can just come back a few minutes later and get more? This is especially easy when the store is really slammed. There are so many people rushing by and crowding the tables... I think it's pretty irresponsible on behalf of the store to place that many alcoholic sample tables out at one time.

Not that I wouldn't take full advantage of it, 'cause I don't turn away free booze... I'm just sayin' :D

It's state by state.

In some states, they can sell beer and wine; in others they can't.

What amazes me is that they could SERVE it.

Florida must have the loosest liquor licensing laws in the country.

I can't imagine supermarkets in most states being allowed to do that.

In New York State, supermarkets and grocery stores need a license to sell beer. Wine is not allowed to be sold in supermarkets.

^ Nothing like that here in Ontario. Only at the Beer Store or the Liquor Store.

I wish they sold booze in grocery stores in NJ. NY is so much easier to get drunk in after 10pm.

I would like to claim that Southeast Louisiana has the loosest liquor laws. They will sample wine and beer as well as liquor even on Sundays. We have drive-thru Daquiri shops here, come on.

after reading some of the responses to this thread, joshy, doesn't it make ye glad we live in florida? I know I am!!!

Sounds like Publix' typical "wine sell." I HAVE actually encountered this phenomenon before, at their stores - not lately though? Maybe it's a post-holiday sales slump for them, and they haul this gimmick out at this time of year to give grocery sales a little post-partum (as it were) boost. Also, isn't Lent now over?

You have to excuse me, I'm a nurseryman and so tend to view phenomenon on a cyclical (or seasonal, if you will) basis.

see this is why i like my grocery store down the street. perhaps because of its close proximity to u.t.s.a. there seems to be an abundance of cute looking, college aged guys both working and shopping there. they don't need to entice me with booze (although that's always a nice diversion) they rope me in with the eye candy. :)

I wish the grocery stores when I was in college had booze samples!

A friend and I used to get lunch Friday and Saturday, the two "sample days" at the stores. But we never got any wine...

I like to sample the pies, biscuits, cake and cheese the set out on some of the counters sometimes. They cut them into bits and stick cocktail sticks in.


Wine, they don't every have anyone giving that stuff out, but butter on hot cross buns, or toast, samples of baked beans and yoghurt have been given away that I recall.

You think the greeters would be getting people to try some hash brownies. That would really improve the food sales once everyone got the munchies.

I've only seen this happen once here. When I was sixteen. I was with Mom, and it was the first time I had tried wine.
