I have refused to sign up for a Yahoo account because I detest that name. It sounds so redneck and déclassé. But now the outfit is being sold to another company which will give Yahoo a new name.

Whatever the name is, it can't be worse that what they have now.

Ya-hooooooooo! No more Yahoo.

I can't bear the déclassé either.

I assume the word comes from Gullivers Travels. Weren't the Yahoo some kind of halfcaste human/Donkeys?

My goodness.
Such a childish petty issue from you.
Don't join then.

Right you are! From wikipedia:

Yahoos are legendary beings in the novel Gulliver's Travels (1726) by Jonathan Swift.
Swift describes them as being filthy and with unpleasant habits, resembling human beings far too closely for the liking of protagonist Lemuel Gulliver, who finds the calm and rational society of intelligent horses, the Houyhnhnms, greatly preferable. The Yahoos are primitive creatures obsessed with "pretty stones" they find by digging in mud, thus representing the distasteful materialism and ignorant elitism Swift encountered in Britain. Hence the term "yahoo" has come to mean "a crude, brutish or obscenely coarse person".

Did you say something?

I moved on from my long standing Yahoo email address about a year ago, but not because of the name. The site has been going down the toilet for years now, and I want to jump ship before it sinks completely.

Interesting that Houyhnhnms is to become the new name.

If Yahoo shut down tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised. In fact, they might as well just do that, they've taken their own product and fucked it up beyond repair. Just pull the plug already, this shit site has been a vegetable on life support for 10 years. They shut down all the good services they had years ago, and what's left is total broken down shit. It's sad actually, considering just how good Yahoo used to be; it was once a "one stop shop" kind of site.

When it does shut down, people who haven't even used the site in years (if ever) will mourn its loss, just like the people who mourned when Blockbuster shut down, or when VCRs went out of production... said people haven't even set foot in a Blockbuster or owned a VCR in over a decade, if ever. It's just this bullshit nostalgia fad.

What will I have to do for my email address if Yahoo closes?

It is the address I use for all my personal dealings.
