I DID used to go through horny periods of the month, and they were both major AND fairly regular. I don't know if you could set your calendar to them, but they certainly seemed fairly regular. That was especially true in college, so between the ages of 19-22. After college, it started evening out somewhat.

Probably pheremones. Just in the same way that after a while, an all female dorm will start having their periods at the same time. The desire to procreate gets very strong around that time of the month...it's probably the last vestiges of estrus for humans. So I think when a woma starts having her period, she releases pheremones that let males known that she is fertile, hence increasing our sex drive.
