^ Shot from inside a convenience store, I think.

There's little "video" here from the lack of light, but the audio, starting about 1:45 is terrifying.

Yes, it's Joplin, MO... I mixed up my state abbreviations and can't change it... Ans it's SUNDAY night, not Saturday..... If a mod could fix my title I'd appreciate it....

Live in the southwest Missouri we did not get anything hey got in Joplin. Look like war zone after it left.

I'm not going to play it.

My sister was visiting in Joplin on Sat. You gave me a bad start.

She was gone by Sunday.

I know what tornado activity does -- I don't want to hear it.
My sincerest apologies on getting the day wrong, H-up...

I was a little freaked out from the coverage.

I hope your sister is fine.... (*8*)

This tornado struck close to 6 PM EST Sunday. These people might have felt the rapture was a day late according to this.

I have several Facebook friends who have family members living there. Some have heard from them, but others are still trying to find out about theirs. I have one Facebook friend who is my Farmville neighbor who lives in Joplin was in the Wal-Mart when the tornado struck there. She was one of the lucky ones who got into a stronger part of the building, and she she andd the others got out, they started digging to free trapped people from the Wal-Mart and applied First Aid before emergency workers arraived. Even the local firefighters needed to be rescue as they were trapped inside their firestation which was also hit by the tornado. That is why I have not been on last night. I was sending prayers towards my Facebook friends for their family members who lives there.

Re: Video of Joplin tornado forming

but its not "forming" as said ...

Re: Video of Joplin tornado forming

Amazing just how quick they can form. Saw the video you posted with them caught inside the retail store as well.

We're lucky in Britain and Europe that we don't live under the constant threat of these things.

Is it generally safer under those conditions to stay indoors, or to make a run for it in your car?

I'm thinking that especially if you live in a flimsy wooden trailer, it might be wiser to be on the road. At least then, you can drive away at top speed from it, or turn around if need be.

Do these regions have emergency underground shelters where you can gather in events like this?

Re: Video of Joplin tornado forming

I've been watching the news unfold about Joplin. It's heart wrenching to see the devastation of the city.

Re: Video of Joplin tornado forming

for some reason, yahoo Canada blocked the videos

Re: Video of Joplin tornado forming

I was tracking this one on radar yesterday...was very odd because of the way it organized itself - very rapidly and in an unusual quadrant of the storm. It came out of Kansas as a big high precip mess and ended up while recycling the mesocyclone. Nobody expected it to reorganize and intensify as fast as it did though....will post a few clips once I have the ability to link, unfortunately the attachments don't allow looping images.

I visited that town once. I have been in the area where the tornado struck. I saw all the lovely trees and all that. Now, I do not reconized that area that I went through. The people are very nice there. They just did not need this.

The people who taped the tornado in the convenience store survived, and the guy who took the video was on CNN telling his tale. 20 people huddled inside the fridge by kicking out all the beer and all that.

saw this video yesterday. truly horrifying. i was in shock almost the whole video.
they were the lucky ones to tell their story. RIP to the others who weren't as fortunate.

Just unbelievable.

My Mom tells the story of going back to Kendall, FL. her hometown after hurricane Andrew in 1992. And being so disoriented by the devastation.

In a town she grew up in, she had NO idea where she was.... All the things - the landmarks- we take for granted were gone. The things that orient us like trees and street signs and buildings had just vanished.

In Joplin, this goes on for miles and miles and miles.

Unspeakably horrible.
