Here in the colonies, redheads are considered to likely be Irish (even if they aren't). Given the possibilities of "The Troubles" flaring up again, with Brexit Backstop, etc., etc., there's a history there (being considered "underclass") that might help explain why the term should be used gingerly in the UK.
