Rather than look for fun things to post, I spent time yesterday thinking and reading about Tyler Clementi, Jamey Rodemeyer, and the many others we’ve lost in one of the saddest ways possible. The Internet is making it possible for young people to learn about and accept their sexualities earlier than many of us could, but it also makes them vulnerable to pressures we never had. Counseling services and parental interventions are limited in effectiveness to counteract all the sources of pressure and influence. Depression, bullying and suicide existed long before the Internet, but now the challenges are greater. Most of us have the power to help in some way – for example, offering support to a confused teenager or donating time or money to organizations that are trying to make a difference.


Thanks for the temporary avatars, Mark (and Steve). I'm not 100% in favor of that method of memorial, but it was appropriate - as well as lovely.
