Nothing really all that spectacular about the story, just there are a surprising number of conservatives living there and the city council in particular was somewhat up in arms over the unveiling once it was discovered he was nude.
The statue is known as The Ultimate Challenge. Commissioned by Edmond Shumpert in 1976 to commemorate the freedom surfing expresses, it was a tribute to the local surfers and was originally to be displayed outside city hall. The artist modeled him after one of his friends after surfing alongside him one morning. When it was realized he was nude, the council moved him to be of all places, interestingly, situated at the entrance to the city....
Although I wasn't alive when it was created, I can still remember as a kid hearing controversy about it, how people thought it odd and offensive to see a naked guy when first entering the city. There was much speculation that the artist was gay...
The true locals and surfers fully appreciate it and fully embraced him though, hence the nickname "The Nude Dude." The same artist created The Duke statue as well as part of the Surfers Hall Of Fame downtown. If you look closely enough, you can see "the goods".
(ugh, miss my home)

I don't drive the truck every day, and apparently it seemed like a great place to live.
I checked this morning and found the most adorable red-haired twins. I whistled and they looked up for a picture.
