A friend is coming up in a couple of weeks to check out a Broadway play and asked for some recommendations on hotels in the Broadway area, but being that I live here, rather than stay in hotels here, I'm clueless as to some of the good, but affordable (realizing that's a relative term for the area) hotels in the area. Any suggestions?

There's a Hampton Inn near Times Square that is somewhat affordable. My family stayed there when they came to visit me a while back.

I stayed at the Super 8 Times Square. I stayed there twice without problems. And they have a nice breakfast buffet in the morning.

What's the budget??? There are not many "budget" alternatives in Manhattan.

Time Out New York has an updated database of budget alternatives but not many are located in Broadway/Midtown. A few have closed in the last couple of years (Habitat, for example). Check the Time Out website for current alternatives.

Last Summer I booked a trip to New York from Orbitz.com for the two of us. The return trip cost $1000.00 US per person for the flight there and back (from Winnipeg, Canada) and hotel room for 5 nights.

We stayed at the Affinia Manhatten around 7th and 36th, kitty corner to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. The walk to Times Square was about 10 minutes (give or take the hoards of people that you have to dodge).

The Affinia Manhattan was great. Each suite even has a little kitchenette for those times when you want to eat in your room and then head out.

My advice, tell you friend to book the trip through Orbitz.com for flight and hotel. Or they can just look at hotel rates for the dates they are coming.

Any other way - the hotel prices are astronomical.

Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

As for the budget, I'm not entirely sure. He seems to be doing quite well for himself, but I just have a natural tendency being the pauper that I am, to look for the cheapest places possible. Knowing what I know of him though, I don't think he'd like to stay in some of the real budget places in the city.

From my own little bit of research, it seems like most places in the Broadway area are upwards of $200/night. I found one hotel whose name escapes me the other night, that looked decent and went for $150. I also found a budget hotel that went for $80, but in that one, the rooms and beds were teeny and you shared bathrooms, so I have the feeling he wouldn't like that.

I'll definitely check out orbitz and expedia.

I stayed at the Milford but like all the rest, they are small but I wasn't there to spend all my time in the room.

Depending on their plans, you might have your friend consider an air/hotel package. I've often found Marriott packages (purchased off of Marriott.com) to be fantasic deals.

For example, I picked some random dates and priced it out:

3 nights at the Renaissance Times Square (2/8 - 2/11) is $925.44 including tax.

3 nights at the same hotel including round trip airfare from Fort Lauderdale is $947.77 including all taxes.
