How close is my computer to dying?

I've had my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop for three years to the day now, and have noticed a flurry of problems over the past six months which seem to all be coming to a head now.

It's been, over time of course, running much slower, and I've noticed that if left idle, it will disconnect from the internet and then when reconnected, run much slower and certain functions are screwy, like the touchpad is turned on and I can't turn it off until I restart the computer.

For the past six months or so, it's taken SO long for the computer to shut down, that I more often than not, have just done a "power off" which can't be good for it.

For the past 6-8 months or so, when I start my computer, a message comes up saying that it cannot read my adapter, and for me to hit any key to continue. Also, my adapter for whatever reason, even if plugged in, will not charge sometimes. I'm not sure of the reasoning for this but it will say "plugged in, not charging". I purchased a new adapter about 18 months ago. This problem occurs in multiple outlets.

And now the kicker, on Wednesday, my computer suddenly would not go past the password screen. It would start, I'd type in my password and then it would freeze on the blue Windows Vista "welcome" screen. To pass this, I had to start in safe mode with networking. Then in doing a google search, learned that I should perform a system restore to restore it to a time before the problem. I did just that, but now every time I turn off the computer, the problem persists and I have to do a system restore again. When I told a co-worker of this, she told me that you can only do that so much, and that the same thing happened to her computer, and after a few days, it died. She told me to backup all of my files ASAP and to prepare for a new computer.

Is she right? Am I days away from my computer dying? Obviously, it's not in the best shape, but I was hoping to hold out for another year. I purchased an external hard drive today just in case and plan to backup all of my files tomorrow (I should have done so earlier) and plan to research other laptop options this weekend, but am just curious as to how close it is to dying and if anyone else has had this happen to them.

I would say backup your stuff, format your hard drive and re-install windows. Or you could boot from a Linux distro cd and if all works ok then it indicates that Vista has fallen over and it is indeed time to re-install.

Virus check?
Malware check?
Defragmented?

great idea to buy the external device man... seems to me you will need it sooner rather than later.... get all your important stuff on it right away...

many of my friends swear by Apple computers, I'm thinking of moving that direction myself..
not one of my buddies that uses an Apple product need an ISP.... and they don't need to pay for McAfee nor anyother virus scan product..

I'd say your computer is about done with the end of her life.... get all your stuff transferred... and wish her farewell... she worked hard for you.

best to you both.

Microsoft sure fucked themselves over when they made Vista it was their ME shitty operating system for 2007.

Apple is so far ahead of MS in so many ways they'll never catch up.

They have the huge advantage because nobody targets Apple operating systems with viruses and spyware. But that doesn't mean Apple is perfect my boyfriend's Macbook fucked up when Firefox kept crashing it was because the hard disk had so many errors he had to reformat it.

Its funny because boyfriend asked the guy at the Mac Store "Was it a virus?" the guy replied "Mac laptops don't get viruses"
