How come nobody likes Linux anymore?

Why don't you use the partitioning option in Ubuntu (from the Live CD) and just repartition your hard drive so as to save your data?

I wrote this post from my Windows Vista PE CD running Firefox :D

Because it is still advisable to back up your data before playing around with partitions, weather it's resizing, formatting, etc.. In any case, I'm done, every thing's backed up to the other drive, it's packed to the last couple of mb's lol. Im good to format the C partition and install.

I'll see you on the other side.

right now, ive downloaded xampp to my desktop, trying to figure out how to install... im transferring my music and vids back to my c: drive... although...I dont know where they are sposed to go either lol...so im putting the folders in my personal folder. Ill post before and after pics shortly :p

man, I got xampp working, but I dont have access to the other folders on c:, do I have to go in terminal everytime I wanna copy a file? theres gotta be something im doing wrong. /opt/lampp permission is set to root, and im in my user account "fred"...

Oh, and I have the screenshot... i just havent figured out what to do with a png lol.

Allrighties...i figured a few things out, got lampp working, i can test my scripts, login to msn, play mp3s, my movies and episodes. And so far, no crash yet. I figured out how to enable login for root user so that I could go change the access permissions to /opt/lampp/htdocs so that I could drop files to the server using the file browser :) gEdit works as fine as textpad, with less toolbars all over the place :)

so, before:

and after (desktop):

and after getting LAMPP to work:

I seriously thought it would take much more than a day to migrate, but I think everything is covered, kickass :)

No worries. I dont have root status on my account. What I did was I logged in from root (once) and changed the permissions of opt/lampp/htdocs and opt/lampp/etc/httpd.conf to set the owner to my account, so I can modify those and only those from my account. I don't need root status and I dont need to login to root to put things on my server. sweeeet :)

And I don't know about tech support but I have a friend with a p2 who can't get windows to work properly no matter how many times he reformats and reinstalls...*evil laugh*

For me, it's not even a question of malware and viruses (most of which are designed for windows anyhoo) i was simply tired of swearing at my pc everytime winamp crashed or wmp during a movie...not being able to update windows without IE was another ticker-offer for me....and the fact that linux is more geared towards programmers...all good reasons.

im pretty satisfied with all the software so far,,, im using vlc for movies, rhythmbox to play mp3's and shoutcast streams, and obviously gedit. I still cant decided between amsn and gaim, oh and I found firestarter...now, if i could only figure out a way to start firestarter and lampp on every longon, that would be sweet.

Oh and btw, I never found the commands for reassigning ownership from the terminal, I ended up logging onto a desktop as root (using System > Administration > Login Window) and changing the ownership from the filebrowser...the fastest thing I could think of. I haven't logged back into root desktop since, and not until I really need to, I don't even trust myself effing around with system files lol.

Could I use VMWare to run the original msn messenger client?

I did some reading where Ubuntu can be used effectively on older Macs prior to G3 and which are a bit thin on ram. So if you want the speed of OSX but have an 8 y/o machine, give it a try. Lots of open source software too. No need to line Bills pocket...|
